Hello!
With the whole STG-Mac Baren disaster, I've come to the realization that I'd better learn how to do it myself -- because STG just wiped out all of the tobacco I smoke with the destruction of Sutliff.
So I'm here to learn how to do it on my kitchen table and in the garage.

Cheers!

Welcome and great choice! Processing and blending my own has added immensely to my enjoyment of my pipes not to mention saved me a ton of money. I think pretty soon you won't miss the commercial stuff at all.

Welcome to the forum. You may want to scan through the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads, linked in the menu bar.

Are you planning to grow your own tobacco, or purchase whole leaf?

Welcome! You will be pleasantly surprised at the increase in quality you will get by processing you own over commercial blends. Without all the additives and artificial flavors you can really appreciate true tobacco flavors. Highly recommend getting one of the pipe blending kits or sampler from WLT. There are many recipes available in the Key Forum Threads link at the top of the page. Have fun!

Until I read this I was unaware that STG had decided to essentially wipe out Sutliff. As I type this I'm just gutted. Sutliff's Balkan Sobranie Original Mix Match has been my go-to daily smoke for a long time now; it was the best of several Balkan mixes I've tried. Now I can't even stock up on it -- it's gone. This comes right after Kramer's Father Dempsey, my second favorite, just - evaporated. White Knight - which seemed suspiciously identical to the Sutliff bulk product - is nowhere to be found.

Maybe I can make a nice VA flake with my own tobacco. Maybe I could even eventually get a decent VA/Per. I doubt very much I could ever match the delicious smoky complexity of a bend like those.

My wife's family has a lot of Danish heritage. We've been to Denmark and enjoyed it. Copenhagen is a nice place. But honestly... screw STG. It seems everything they touch turns to crap, and if they can't make it crappy they just kill it off altogether. For a giant tobacco company they sure seem to hate tobacco and those who enjoy it.

Start with Balkan White, then move up or down the matrix to find your Latakia happy place.

Amen. Agree wholeheartedly. I saw Father Dempsey on Smokingpipes fairly recently. Might want to look again.

Yeah, I saw it there as wel... but I just bought 3-1/2# of whole leaf to supplement what I grew, so I'll just hold off until I figure out what I'm doing with my own blends.
