I grew this old world, german variety this last year in Denmark on the island of Falster. It did rather well in this northern european, cooler, wetter climate as one might expect. Unfortunately, I planted rather late, so my harvest was smaller than hoped and I had trouble curing most of it. I still got a respectable amount of higher quality, well air cured leaves and some lower quality stuff as well. I just finished lightly fermenting the lower quality stuff and smoked my first pipe full to taste it as I usually do. Amazing! It is definitely a cigar/cheeroot tobacco very reminiscent of Havana, with longer, darker leaves. It is similar in taste to Havana, but perhaps darker, earthier and less spicy, with a sweet, delicate after taste. This is a must grow next year. I will plant earlier and start curing sooner. I don't really know how else to describe the taste other than it tastes Old World. This variety was used in the great cigar factories of Europe over a hundred years ago and grown in the Alsace region as well as other regions and is only grown in very small quantities there today. The taste is immensely satisfying and I highly recommend it. Mostly used as cigar filler or binder, it can also be used as wrappers or pipe tobacco. If anyone else has tried it, I would love your feedback. I can not wait to try the higher quality leaves, fermented deeper and aged. So stoked!
