I just made another order from Whole Leaf and trying with order to change things up a bit. Most of my leaves has been Nicaraguan so this time I ordered the Pennsylvania Binder. When I opened the box I saw they were long and skinny and only around 40 leaves in it. I wish I had read that before I ordered, most of my binders has been 50 -100 per pound, still learning......LOL.
My question is how did you like this binder and is it worth the money? Thank you very much.

PA binder has a rich and distinctive flavor. It makes a sturdy, stretchy binder as a single layer. A thicker and heavier leaf means that it contributes more to the cigars weight, thickness and aroma. PA binder is a (unidentified) Pennsylvania Broadleaf variety. A strip of it makes an interesting contribution as filler, when using a different binder.

My preference is for a double binder of Besuki or Sumatra, though I will frequently use just about any variety for binder if it has the structural strength to get the job done. The thinner binders (with a higher leaf count) frequently work better as a double binder. So the net usage per pound comes out about the same for me.

Thank you Bob, and since you told me about the double binder I have been using it with great success. Since the PA binder is so big and thick, will it work as a single binder?

I have never seen the Besuki or Sumatra, is that the full name and does Whole leaf carry it?

Thank you

Which one is in stock varies from time to time. Currently, I see Sumatra binder on WLT: https://wholeleaftobacco.com/Sumatra-Cigar-Binder-SmtrBinder.htm

Sumatra is quite mild, and even the binder grade often makes a nice wrapper. It's not unusual for me to do a double binder of Sumatra or Besuki, and just decide to not bother with adding a wrapper.

The PA binder seems to work well as a single binder.

I have PA binder from a long time ago. I don't know if it's the same, but the leaves are huge. You can use a quarter leaf to bind a corona.

I cut them length wise, use one for binder, and one for wrapper, but you can use both for binder. The honduran filler is strong without the pepper. As a binder, it works very well. It's nice and thick. Depending on how big your go to sticks are, you should be able to get 4+ binders off of one half leaf.

Thank you Dave, I can't with to try them out for a little different flavor. I usually use a Nicaraguan Binder, Dominican Volado Piloto Cubano, Dominican Ligero Criollo 98,Nicaraguan Seco Jalapa, and a Dominican Seco Piloto Cubano to make up my cigar.

Is it PA Broadleaf? I assume that is probably is. If so, it is very similar to Connecticut Broadleaf, just darker and more robust. PA binder is popular in the cigar industry and, as Bob said, it imparts its own flavor to the blend. After you give it a fair try you'll probably like it fine. You can always use some as filler to strengthen your blend.

Looks like you're using some great tobaccos already. Hope you enjoy!

I couldn't wait so yesterday morning I got out one PA leaf from the freezer, spritzed with water and put in my bag. Last night I rolled it with four filler leaves, two Seco, one Volado, and one Ligero and smoked it. What a good cigar and it lasted for over an hour and 1/2.

You should think about sharing your blend! I've been looking for a blend that wasn't too strong. I have a blend of 2 Criollo 98' viso, 2 Corojo 99' viso, and 2 San Vincente' Seco with a Penn Wrapper. Creamy, but a little strong for some of my friends, including some here on FTT (right Bob?)

Oh, since you have some Criollo Liguero (love the stuff, and need to order more), you should think about adding a Corojo. Criollo and Corojo make music together in a blend :)

Rewind to 371 cigars ago...Ah! Yes! I remember #40.

Seriously, the varieties and priming levels of the filler varieties that I have on hand are constantly changing. So are the wrappers. I just gestalt the relative strengths of what is available, and guess a blend. They almost always come out more to my liking than commercial cigars (except for some of the original Hoyo de Monterrey cigars--double corona, Rothschild, Demi-tasse, which I have yet to equal, although Don's Honduran filler got me damn close).

I really love Don's (WLT's) honduran. I like to keep extra on hand. You're right, the strengths can change. Don's leaf seems to get a little better every year.
