I've been looking for tobacco plant roots system and couldn't find any specific info about sizes and how deep they can go, does anyone have some measures , its doesn't need to be something precise I just need to have a general idea about it, the ones I manage to find didn't look to big one feet maybe.

Tobacco is generally shallow rooted. While the lateral spread may extend two or more feet from the stalk, there is no real tap root. The downward extent depends on the average water table, but I my tobacco generally extends downward about 12 to 15 inches.

i grew some in 5 gallon buckets last year and flue cured big gem and kelly burley filled the buckets with roots but black sea samsun only had a small root ball less than 1/3 of the bucket. plants in the grownd were bigger in root size but around the same relative size in comparison.

ive seen some big root balls.. a s showed ^^^^ above,

but here in florida, with course sand, allmost like sugar,,, my roots have not been very big at all.
who knows perhaps if the plant dont have to work hard to spread it's roots,, [ like my soil ] then it wont ahave big roots,

but if the plants have a hard type soil, and it must fight it's way to get its roots to spredead, they will be more bigger, because of the fight it had to put up... to get them going,????

just a theory,,, but my plants should have had a massive root ball. if that were natural for all plants,,,, and they didnt,,

'' thats my theory ''

High water table or a lot of rain will also make for small root balls, as the plant doesn't have to search for water.
