Most of you will not be planting tobacco with a mechanical setter, since it is designed for commercial use, but just watching the simplicity (and lack of fuss) of how the tobacco is set may give you a sense of comfort in your hand setting of your tobacco transplants. The machines just cut a furrow, a seedling (hand-fed by a person) is dropped into a chute, and two angled wheels compress the soil, closing the furrow. In most machinery, water (about 2 cups) is then dumped onto each seedling that is set.
