So, I made a batch of my own dip the other day. Sort of using a recipe from Snus At Home on You Tube.

The differences between his recipe and what I did were:

-I used an antique hand operated meat grinder instead of a blender to cut the leaf. (I ended up with a cut very much like Snus with this. Not my prefered, but I think it is because I ran it through twice. It felt big and rough when the tobacco was dry, hence the double grinding, but it changed a lot when I added the water, whiskey and such. A blender would have been much easier.

-I used American Whiskey instead of Scotch. I'm glad I did. This stuff is super smoky as is, a smoky Scotch would have made it more so, too much to my taste. (I used the WLT Kentucky Fire Cured)

-I used Kosher instead of Table salt. I don't like overly salty dip, and Kosher leaves less perceived salt flavor than Table.

-I didn't use a scale. I just eyeballed everything. I figure after dipping for decades and decades I know how dip should look and feel. That worked out A-OK.

I tried the dip immediately, and it is very good dip. It isn't a copy of my Cope, but it is excellent.

Things I learned:

-When mixing the liquid with the tobacco, the most ungodly smell comes off of it for a few minutes. I mean you'll think you might die bad smell! Next time I'll do that outside.

-Next time I'll let it sit in a bowl covered with a wet cloth for a day or so before putting it into bags or jars. Let it mellow a bit more.

All in all a really excellent natural dip. I've been using it for three days now, and it is better (mellowing) with each passing day, pointing to the desirability of letting it age some.

It was a great project, a lot of fun, easy to do, and I learned quite a bit about dip in the process.

His recipe is here:

My long report of how I did it is here:

And oh yeah, I had to give it a name, so I'm calling mine Snek Dip!

One final thought... The Nic is just right. Plenty powerful.

Yep, I read it carefully, but not until after I made mine! I kind of went about this project backwards, but it did work out great, so I guess that's OK.
