Plants are sprouting underground, WT*?

Some of my plants (maybe 10%) grew sprouts underground with yellow leaves. What can cause this? Somehow the buds below the surface got activated. It's an upgrade from suckers. The plants were ready to be harvested at that point, so no harm done except all the energy that went into this...
