After a soaker of a storm last night, I found my Scantic "protecting itself". A large leaf pulled up and over the bud head and small leaves. My first thought was wind, but the leaf of two side by side plants were from opposite sides.

Amazing. You may be on to something here. Never heard of it, but the pictures seem to show protection. Unless it was the wind? I have noticed a leaf over the top like that but figured it was the wind.

When the early frost hit last season, the upper leaves of my plants protected the bud head in the same way. All the leaf was toast, but the bud head was still alive.
The plants' goal is to produce seed. That is why suckers are put out if you top a plant and the plants will do some amazing things to try to reach their goal, which the plant sees as it's sole purpose for being. Go forth and multiply.

I used to think wind too, until the side by side plants had leaves folded opposite directions, and it had not even been windy.

Yes, I see by the photos that it couldn't be the wind.

The guys who taught me shade tobacco said more than once that it takes more than one lifetime to learn all there is to know about tobacco.

This is a new one for me.
