Hello everyone. I'm newer to the forum and new to cigar rolling but not new to cigars, pipes and tobacco. A bit ago I picked up a rolling kit to try my hands at it and I want to continue my journey. So I've rolled up all the leaves and looking for new leaves to purchase. Can I get some help from you guys on what to choose? For purchasing cigars I like Connecticut Shades. My question is what binder and fillers have you guys found that provide that mild-medium bodied cigar with heavier cedar, cream, nutty notes?

I didn't care for the cigars that the leaves in the kit made. It was good but not what I'm seeking. They were too bold, too much nic, too spicy and lacked the flavors that I like. The kit came with Dominican Seco binder, Nicaraguan Viso filler, and Ecuadorian Viso Shade wrappers. I want to purchase from Whole Leaf next, I hear the quality is better as well. I did order a mold from them off the eBay and it comes with their Azucarado Oscuro II kit that contains a Ecuador Maduro wrapper, Dominican binder, Dominican Seco, Paraguay Flojo viso, and Nicaraguan ligero. This is going to be not my style either but it comes with the mold. I still want to place an order with Whole Leaf.

Any suggestions? Thanks guys!

Welcome,

I think everything there in that WLT kit fits your description of what you would like except for the Nicaraguan ligero. Maybe change that out with criollo or piloto.Idon't know if you can. I am not sure the Dominican binder is available outside the kits any more. Although, I think it might be back in stock soon. I think you would like that. It's smooth.

You would probably like the melodioso cremosa blend kit. If you think the Azucarado blend will be too strong for you, just use 1/4 the amount of the Ligero, or swap it out with some Piloto viso. I think the rest of that blend will actually be fairly creamy and smooth, especially with those changes.

Welcome to FTT,
To the tips above, I will add that the size (length and width) and the shape of the cigar, as well as the type of draw (compression of the filler) will change the way you will feel the strength and the aroma of the cigar.

Short, loose = more strong / harsh
Long, tight = more smooth / creamy

I knew that the pack of the cigar makes it smoke hotter/harsher or cooler/smoother however I didn't know that a tighter roll will produce a creamier flavor. I will give it a try. I am interested in that Melodioso Cremosa blend kit and will give it a try on my next order. Everyone, thank you for your replies and the welcomes!

Well, I describe it as creamy, I don't know if it's the best description, but it's the way I feel it.
When the cigar is tight (not clogged), I feel that the flavors are more creamy, smooth, heavy, palatable, better :)

I haven't tried this yet but sounds like something you'd enjoy..

no. 126 test burn: 1 rene seco 1 corojo viso 1 san vicente ligero, corojo wrap as binder, ct shade 2006 wrapper, all tobaccos WLT, 80 day rest.

Already know how this is going to taste: superlative mild/medium cigar. Have repeatedly rolled ten packs of these in 36 and 46rg and they've been consistently great. Reminds me of the great long gone Zino Davidoff Mouton Cadets. You can smoke them in a day or two, but they improve with age.

This is an original blend, my hand wasn't tipped by anything other than fooling around with cigar tobacco I had.

If you're looking for a great morning or gentle afternoon cigar blend, this is it.

Thanks for that! Sounds awesome as the old Mouton Cadet #6 was my old FAVORITE. It's only a memory now with maybe an old box being used for storage but man they were the hen's teeth.

Here's one to try:
Connecticut shade wrapper, and Connecticut shade binder
2 Criollo Seco
2 Corojo Viso (can be replaced with Seco)

Very smooth....
