For the guys that grow or have grown multiple burley varietals. What do you notice in taste from one to the other? I understand each varietal has different growing and curing characteristics, but i havent seen much on how they taste or the burn characteristics specifically in pipe smoking. I plan in growing next year and I'm curious about this because I only want to grow certain strains that fit what I'm looking for instead of just getting a bunch of different seeds and hoping for the best.

I've grown different burley varieties. I settled on TN90 for pipe and cigarettes. It has a strong burley flavor.
For a milder, more medium strength burley it would be hard to beat Harrow Velvet.

The same variety grown in different places will differ from each other... here you just have to grow it yourself and see how it turns out in your conditions.

What are you looking for?

Bob
Not 100% sure. Something on the medium/full profile. I'm just more or lease curious about what people have noticed between one seed to another.

Climate wise, I should have any trouble growing. I live in West Tennessee. Use to be alot of burley grown around here but it's all practically moved away within the last 20 years.

I'll go with @Knucklehead's suggestions. For medium-full, TN 90 would be a good choice. As far as nuances among most US burley varieties, the specific growing season and soil conditions in a given year will influence the end result more than differences in the variety. (Harrow Velvet is a milder, Canadian burley.)

Thanks Bob. I'm going to give these a go for next year.

Pretty sure I would yield to the temptation of choosing a local heirloom variety were I to live in a historical Tobacco growing area.

I'm very new to all this but there seems to be no end to the ways of manipulating this plant,
the difference between being raised as a row crop and a back yard pet alone I would guess to be profound for example.

Certainly simplify the choice anyway.

I would be the last person to ever be on face book but I'll bet with a little inquiry there you could find out just what the variety (s) were for consideration of the experts here.
