im sure you'll still have a use for that drip line as the year progresses,

nice knowing its there, '' waiting ''

I hope this second late planting has a better start than the first. I just don't know if I need to plant this evening or not with all this hard rain forecast. What do you think?

I would be inclined to go by the texture of the soil. If you plant in mud, the roots won't do well, regardless of the weather. As soon as the soil is a bit drier, stick them in the ground.

unless you can cover them for the storms I would wait. I ended up replanting about 30% of my garden patch that took the "artificial rainfall" beating the day after planting.

If I look at the calendar I would plant them 9th of July. It is also the best time if you look for to plant leaf. Dont Clip them. They should wait. Good luck.

I clipped my va golds leaving half of each of the biggest leaves to keep them another week in the 72cell tray without badly overshading eachother. Since planting 10 days ago even the clipped leaves are still growing, to the point now that my straight cuts now have a crescent shape as the trimmed leaf has grown. The haircut did not seem to slow them down at all but maybe encouraged some extra root growth.

Too late on the clipping. I took off the bottom three leaves in anticipation of planting them kinda deep, then gave them the GI haircut. High and tight on the sides, flat up top.

Post 593 shows them a week ago. They grew a good bit this past week. I gave them a haircut today, but I'll post a picture tomorrow.

Hey KnUcks, what about airiating the soil around the slow ones.......maybe with a spadefork. The early planting and loads of rain may have compacted the soil before the roots could get going good. May just be Rootbound.

Possible. But with the clay composition, this dirt gets soft and squishy when it's wet and like cement when it's dry. It hasn't been dry long enough to be cement, so if the roots wanted to grow, they've had plenty of soft and squishy to grow in. My theory is that the roots are not having to search for water, so they are staying small, and the leaves are just staying small with the roots. However, with the lack of sunlight, you would think the plant would be getting tall and leggy like in the grow cells, or like shade grown cigar wrapper. (????) I don't have a thing to back that up with. The plants are green, low to the ground and look healthy. They're just not growing. ------------- Also, I have no idea how close to the plant I can aerate without damaging the roots already there. Suggestions are welcome.

I don't know when I'll be able to plant my seedlings. It would be like throwing them off the side of a boat.
