I hear ya there. Though this is my third season of growing And I only smoke a pipe and cigars (now!)
I have to get my head around down south, As over here I am south I mean its only penguins and foreign Fishing trawlers Oh and ufo bases on Antarctica. Though i am paying attention to what you guys are doing, well sorta the whole light thing is beyond me. might spend a awhile learning about lumens and stuff. But i do enjoy reading all of you guys blogs

Just go to Wally World and get a 4' fixture and 2 gro bulbs and put them inchs away from your plants and forget about them.... But unless they have a lil sunlite they will be harder to harden off I think.

I concur with that Fisherman. If you don't have a good source of sunlight (which is my case), a week or two into hardening off I install a 300 watt inc. bulb to turn on a hour or two a day to give that extreme light.

I talked to Bigb yesterday about the problem I had with plants dying until I got the grow lights. Listen up. He said it was my low E windows! I would never have thought of that. He said house plants don't even do good in front of low E windows. I'll be darned. Learn something new everyday. He had some good news, he said when night time temps are steady above 40 degrees, I can move the float trays outside and cover with plastic at night or when cold. I was under the mistaken impression I was going to have to wait until they were ready to harden off, not so.

BigBonner will soon be posting his list of seedling varieties, so you guys needing plants keep your eyes out. $1.50 - $2.00 per, depending on variety. I wish I had gone that way this year and the wife does too. I have plants and seed starts all over the house. I think next year I'm going to start buying my production plants from BigB, like my cigarette varieties, and dedicate my indoor efforts to seed grow outs. I can take more grow out varieties that way and help keep the seed bank refreshed, and I can free up my current lighting just for the grow outs without having to buy more lighting. Sounds pretty cool, yeah? I think that's what stogie is doing, too. I can understand why now.

YOU'LL TAKE ALL THE FUN out of the crop being something you babied to life, by buying a crop, ready to drop in the ground,

i understand if you may not have the means, to raise the youngin's

...................................

but i find the adventure, in the starting, ,,,re-potting......continuous nutering, until the plant is of the right size, to be placed, in the beautiful. spot you've prepared for your baby since it's birth,

.....................................................

but hey,,,, BIG b... does make a awesome plant,,,, he's a professional tobacco farmer, the way he does things, is the way to have sucess at , the end product,

what he provides is actually, a good thing, to those, that cant have '' youngin's''<

Yo Chicken - I think I could grow to love an adopted kid as much as a natural birthed one. Especially if I can adopt him after the diaper changing phase. LOL

Started seed today straight to soil, under 500 watt shop light 3-26-2013. Three of each for sampling and seeds to spread around. Next year I definately want some Dominican Olor and Jalapa.
Glessnor
CT Shade
CT Broadleaf
Little Dutch
Vuelta Abajo
Comstock Spanish

Sprouts coming up from this seeding. 5 days to green tops popping up.

Now thats cool! or warm!

I made a mini version just like that but different ;) to keep labor of moving ready trays, with the 15% sunblock agribon for hardening off trays to handle a full sun hardening before setting. For a home grow only at a 4' x8' footprint.

Larrys set up is really neat. Even the 15% agribon sheds and repels water, I sprayed the top which has a miniscule slope and it puddles and stays for hours.

I'll be moving my float trays outside pretty soon. Need temps. above 40 degrees at night and cover them with plastic at night. This will free up the lights for some cigar varieties I have coming along. My grow list keeps changing. (bigger)

Hey Knucks, I found the growing of tobacco to being more addictive than the usage. The usage is less addictive, you never run out and seems less addictive for you can control what you smoke. The first time in 25 yrs my cigarette consumption dropped by a third after growing for my self. My cigar consumption started though. I may use a pack worth in a good cigar. But its my time for the effort and end product,!
Every year I spent a couple hundred on garden for eating and now smoking also,Unless a one time expense such as new tiller comes up like last yr. My 200.00 this year is spent on green house and seeds so its just labor here on out. I'm in it to save more than a buck.
I cant finish 2011 pantry.

Okay lets say $250.00- $350.00 to restock a pantry and and a few years of tobacco. considering everything out of pocket. It takes a redneck like me or chicken to do it for that.

That's true. I cut way back by just getting away from the chemicals that were in the packaged cigarettes. Besides that, If I keep adding to my grow list, I won't have time to smoke. Smoking will be a winter way to pass the time. lol
