I had read that Kentucky was building a factory that used hemp in the same way. They are both a yearly renewable source as opposed to a hardwood.

Interesting to note that they're not actually growing or using parts from plants, just growing cells in solution. I got a mental picture of tobacco "ghost algae", since there's no chlorphyll.
Tobacco is the white rat of plant researchers. It is easy to grow, produces lots of seeds, grows readily in cell cultures, and easy to manipulate genetically. Pretty much anything you want to research in the plant world, you do with tobacco and/or Arabidopsis first.
