In 1889, Chief Whitecap presented this pipe to a physician (Gerald Willoughby) who testified on his behalf during the trials that followed the Riel Rebellion. It has just been repatriated to the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.

That would be sage that you can see stuffed in the stem and bowl of the pipe; its not for smoking. Its just something some people do when their pipe isn't in use.
You gotta wonder how they polished those pipes up so well back in the day when they didn't have fine grained sandpaper available to them.

Pipestone has a hardness of 2.5 Mohs, comparable to soapstone or jet. Sooo......

Wood impregnated with the dust of a harder stone or tipped with a hard stone (for hole making). Make a stone file; use a hard stone to smooth a softer stone then scribe lines, the width, depth and spacing of which determine the grade of finish. Use resin or sap to stick grit to a piece of cloth or leather. The possibilities in the wild are endless.
