They're looking fine. They're really liking all the root room. There are steep hills to the south and west of my patch, which is where most of our weather comes from. They're protected pretty good from the wind.

So am I correct that the "Black Sea Samsun" seeds I got from the Tobacco Seed Co. are plain old "Samsun" and not Maden?

I hope its not plain old since I have it planted also! I have never seen or tried it, but hope to this year.
Your gardens looking good Knucks. You certainly have a beautiful property. You can't beat spring fed . Cold clear water, diverting runoff sounds like a smart idea considering the springs.
It makes me thirsty for cold spring water.

Hope you can join me one day for some fishing and floating around on floats with cigars and cigarettes in zip locks and cooler tied to us with a rope. lol Bring along leverhead and fisherman and don't forget to stop for Boboro. I can see him being the life of any party! Maybe we can even talk him into setting himself on fire again, lol.

Dang my hyperactive hide! I'm going to plow up my wrapper variety spot today. Post #1 shows the picture. My question is, should cigar varieties classed as "binder" also be grown in the shade?

From my experience and member comments all shade growing does is give you a slightly smaller more delicate (smaller ribs) leaf. I don't like a delicate binder as it is not as physically strong. So I typically do not use shade grown as binder. Remember, that's just My opinion.

I was afraid someone was going to say that. Now I have to fill that spot with all wrapper varieties. Crap!

Busy morning. I fertilized my yard and the baccy patch, using the four wheeler mounted seeder / spreader. It plugs into the ATV accessory outlet and runs off the battery. It's the cats meow back in the woods putting in food plots for deer. Did a nice even spread in the tobacco patch also. It's supposed to start raining this pm and rain for the next few days, so timing was good. seed spreader.jpg Our road washed out from the last rain, so I did some repair work with the bucket and rock rake while I was out and about on the tractor and the ground was soft. road repair.jpg I prepared my spot for the wrapper varieties. I've been rotating the crop here for eight years and plowing twice a year. What you see left growing are some annuals, winter wheat, buckwheat, winter peas and crimson clover. These will die out this summer. This plot is practically weed and grass free from the twice a year plowing before the weeds seed out. It runs north and south and gets maybe two hours of full sun a day, the rest of the day is mottled sun through the trees. I ordered some Jalapa, Olor, and Lonnie's Havana from Larry to go with some other wrapper varieties I've already started. Wrapper plot.jpg I went back over my test, sample and seed grow out area, it's taking shape pretty good. grow out.jpg An update of my cigarette variety plot, Virginia on one side, Burley on the other, 50 plants of each. I ordered 10 more Burley from Larry to finish out the row of Burley. The Izmir and Samsun-Maden is just beyond the cloth and not under drip. The Turkish was not fertilized this morning. I will be adding 10-20 Smyrna #9 there that I ordered from Larry. cigarette plot.jpg This is mostly just extra space I plowed at the end of my cigarette variety patch. I don't know yet what I'll put there. Hopefully nothing. lol It looks small but that's about 70 more feet of patch. extra space.jpg
