Hi hope this is in the right place ect
Hi people I have just put down some TN49 and Virginia seed in an alumium bake tray half filled with wet white sand and am intending to cover with cling wrapp after awhile. My plan is to tanspant some of these to jiffy pots once hey begin to germinate I separated the seed on defined halves of the tray. I would have liked some burly but suspect I left it a bit late to get the seed now as I really think I should have started this a couple of weeks ago. My extra's I might just put in trays or disposable pots til I can plant them out, So how does my plan sound so far

Cheers Craig that is very generous of you. I though I was the one and only Ozzie here. yeah I'm in the Central Highlands so it is a much shorter season than I am use to in the Riverland in SA but if we get a warm summer it should be good. The last time I tried to grow summer lasted fair dinkum about two weeks and we had about 3 or 4 days of nice weather over 25 before it turned to crap again, that really put me off but the last 2 summers were quite good and last yr even spring wasn't to bad so you never know your luck. The old folks here tell me about it snowing on Christmas day here to so yeah you just never know your luck in this unpredictable place

Hmm thought I'd be right with just the two varieties I had but for some reason the Virginia failed to germinate. The TN 49 came up but the other didn't even though it was in the same tray. Anyone know the general shelf live of Virginia seed ?

i try to start different strains of seeds in different containers because if one strain takes a week longer to germinate than the other you eather have to leave the cover on and risk mold and desease on plants or drying out the other strains seeds that were slower and eather option is not good in my opinion. it happened to me once and it won't happen to me again. (just my opinion)

I second that. I actually use plates, paper towels, and plastic wrap. That way I know that everything in that plate is xxx strain.

Also welcome. Really do like seeing more and more members from all over the globe partaking in our festivities.

yeah I don't know what's going on with the Virginia seed so far I've had maybe three or four come up and I don't think I will get any more. the TN49 is fine, last time I grew this virginia was 2 yrs ago and it was no probs germinating. Its been stored in a draw inside so I don't know what the deal is but it does look to me that very little of the seed is viable and what has come up is not in great shape

Ok well I was interstate for the last few months and came back to the pleasant surprise of finding my plants for the most part doing well. most were starting to go to seed and seem to be ready for harvest. As the frost season started in earnest this morning I started to pick all viable leaves and have threaded them on nylon cord. I have them hanging from the base of a top bunk bed in a warm room but after reading up am thinking this room may dry them to quick not allowing them to brown, Is that correct? Any advise welcome

If you are worried about drying green there are two things you can do. Space the leaves on the string much closer together and also you can pile the leaves until they yellow before hanging. Just remember to re-pile them once a day so they don't compost. It's also worth buying a thermometer/hygrometer so you can monitor temps and humidity in your curing room. Also make sure you have a fan in there to move the air around. That helps prevent mold. Good luck!

If Your humidity is to low, You can use a simple house hold humidifyer to bring it up a bit. I use two when it is at 8% to 30%. And one when it is anything above. And yes remember the fan. crow, it sound like Your hands will be full after You get the baccy in from the frost.

Another approach, if the humidity is too low, is to cover the hanging leaf with a large sheet of plastic. Vent as needed, to avoid condensation or mold.

Would Tyvek work? Slow the drying, but not suffocate it...
