Whats with you guys over there with your lites?? Arnt ya better less bloated ..getting drunk faster..drinking less with full strength? Or is it cheap;)

Corporate America discovered long ago it's not the product which sells, it's the song and dance. Diluted beer, skim milk, adulterated everything, all it takes is a funny ad at the superbowl. As PT Barnum said, nobody ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American public. Nor an election either, for that matter.

In Merry Olde England, there was a London beer inspector. A pub was required to call him in and buy a tax stamp before selling a new brew. The inspector's equipment consisted of a pint pot, a pair of leather shorts, and a three-legged stool. He drew a pint, poured some on the stool, sat down on it, and drank. When he had finished the pint and stood up, the stool had better stick to his leather shorts, or else they flogged the brewmaster for "shorting" the ingredients. They called "lite" small beer, cause even Shakespeare could spell better than that.

Here rests in peace a Hampshire grenadier
Who caught his death by drinking cold small beer
Soldier, take heed from his untimely fall
And when you drink, drink strong, or not at all

Lite beer is a disgrace on our nation.

Back in the Olde England days, small beer was what children drank. Or workmen on a job if it was hot. They made it after making regular beer by running a second infusion on the mash after straining out the stronger wort.

And if you ran out, you hopped out the ship at Plymouth Rock to plant barley.

Reminds me of a story heard recently.

International Brewers' convention in the US midwest. Richard Oland (of a prominent eastern Canadian brewing family producing Moosehead, Oland's and other real beers) was sitting around a table with head honchos from the Budweiser. Milwaukee and Coors establishments. These chaps all ordered one of their company brands; Oland ordered a coke. One of his tablemates chided him on his choice of drink, to which Oland replied: Since none of you are drinking beer, I didn't feel right unless I got something light too.
