These were taken along Little Gunpowder River at Jerusalem Mill in Baltimore County, Maryland. The hornets are European Hornets, about 1¼" long. They are not agressive; I was 7 - 8" away when I took the pictures. I took about 10 pictures and they ignored me, though I did see one flinch from the shadow of a bird flying overhead.

@smallwanderings Nice, did you pop any pods on the touch me not? I guess I’m still a child because I can’t resist when I see one!
No, I had completely forgotten that or I would have. I very much like such childlikeness. "Except you become as little children...." we miss so much to see aound us.

C. S. Lewis said that when he became a man he put away childish things, one of which was the fear of being thought of as being like a child.

I lived along the Susquehanna river 40 years ago near the small town of Marietta, Pa. A short walk upriver, along the shore there were pot rocks big enough that I could have stood in them, at least up to my shoulders if not higher, and I am 6'3", or at least I was then.

Awesome. This summer when up in the nearby mountains here in Colorado, a pair of tiger swallowtails did a brief and frantic dance and I was fortunate to catch a quick picture of one 20210710_211826.jpg

I was born in Colorado Springs when my family went there from Pennsylvania for a vacation and decided to stay for a while. I remember nothing, being still an infant when they moved back to PA. I have never been back.

I was almost born in France but my family got on the ship that took them to America and so I was born an American citizen. We emigrated in through Texas and the family worked in the fields harvesting fruit and vegetables. Hard life but a good life for non English speaking people.

That's the only kind of Spinx moth I have ever seen here. My wife once spent hours trying to get a photo of one. They don't come out until it's nearly dark. They love petunias and tobacco flowers too. But don't lay eggs that turn into tobacco horn worms.
