Hello, my name is Richard and I am a lover of the sacred herb known as tobacco. I use snus and nasal snuff and when I make time smoke a pipe and rarely the expensive cigar. I have tried my hand at making my own nasal snuff with good results. Eventually will try my hand at snus and now looking around this site I can imagine becoming interested in rolling my own cigars and making pipe tobacco too. I have a few seeds to sow so I'm glad to pick up some information on growing tobacco here.

Welcome juxtaposer, I bet you could grow year round, any kind of smoke you wanted. Theres a lot of posts here about snuff and snus and rolling your own cigars is the way to go. It may influence the varietys you start with.

Until your first crop grows itself in your amazingly fertile lava soil, I just wanted to make sure you knew about cigars international, retail and auction sites, cigars need not be expensive. Also our members sell a dazzling array of whole leaf, not to mention the owner of this site, Don, has retail leaf at wholeleaftobacco.com in cigar sampler packs so you can easily get started rolling and sampling many different kinds all at once.

I would wish you luck on starting out, but as someone who grew up in hawaii I know you won't need any hehe. We used to have plants grow by the garbage can, perfect peppers spread by birds just there to be harvested. green thumbs are common in hawaii:)

as to what kinds of seed to get thats why i suggest getting the cigar (and other) sample packs. will get you started tasting all the different strains and seeing which ones to grow. my favorite cigar types are the cuban strains (havana 142 503 etc) they have this unique flavor that i cant describe but love.

also there is literature out there that states the same tobacco grown in 2 different regions will be different, so once you figure out what the lava soil imparts to the taste you can get a good idea of what to grow in the next season.. certain types will grow better in the rainy season vs the drier season.

i'm guessing anything you grow will be best in class though.
