I have several varieties that were successfully seeded last year that weren't followed thru properly that are being what I call do overs. All are looking good. cigar and cigarette varietys. I am using spinosad though instead of bt for worm control because It is rarely available here.My question to ask is will that be a problem for seeds? It has a warning on the info relating to seeds.

I think Spinosad will be OK. Last year Jessica stated that they sprayed their buds with Tracer before they bagged them.
It is a Spinosad type insecticide

We have had so much rain since planting and me being absent that there has been little opportunity to till between the rows for weed control. It's to late now. If it dries a little I may yet be able to in my other patch.

I would be inclined to top the Vuelta Abajo (at least most of those that are budding), and keeping up with the subsequent suckers. You should end up with some large and lovely leaf.

I am inclined to do so. They will continue shooting out suckers and budding and reach 2' taller when I do if not maintained. I need to wait till the bud shoots up a bit further, so I can get my clumsy fingers in there to pinch it off.

Some of the earliest FTT videos and pics showed some Cuban operations of tobacco farms. The guys in charge of topping the plants were very deft or dextrous with there fingers doing topping. I can't say the same for me. I can easily destroy any budding leaves emerging around the bud. Those may be my favorites.

I saw that video.Hes a two fisted topper. That is how you do commercial burley. I'm talking delicately plucking the bud for the saving of the uppermost leaves in a prized cigar variety. I'd fit right in on Bonners farm i bet. I need to learn to finesse the bud plucking on my cigar plants. Alright I decided, no plucking today.

I think my recent photos looked better before enhancement, it took away from the true color.
When I top the Vuelta Abajo this week that means I have to prepare my curing area. It came sooner than I thought.

Looks good BarG, you got some work cut out for you with topping, sucker-hunting and curing.

I am cleaning my carport and setting up my curing stands already. I will be priming some Bezuki this weekend. I will have them set up in time. All the work was done a couple years ago. I can set the racks up in 30 min. Cleaning the area takes much longer.

I have been trying to take care of the suckering when I do my aphid control . A pump sprayer with mild dish detergent to spray any adults and wash th larvae from the infested areas. The horn worms have been kept in check this year and minor budworms. A new culprit though, I believe the snowy tree cricket invaded while I was out of town and attacked my best marylands and virginias.

It looks like a cross between a grasshopper and a roach. They are light green with clear wings and hind legs like a cricket or grasshopper and a head like a roach. It's wierd because they are supposed to eat aphids, but I only find them on plants full of holes in the leaves and the plants with aphids are untouched by them.

I got those, I saw one on one of my plants yesterday. I did not kill it, it got away. Will spinosad kill them? I sprayed the day before.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Spinosad just works on worm type pests like hornworms.
