I looked at the hookah (Khalil Mamoon - Shamadan - 55 USD). First, I must say that I'm smoking nargile at least for 40 years but I've never heard this brand so I don't know its quality. Its bowl is standart fired clay (bigger than yours) this is good. "Ser" (metal body of the hookah) is stainless steel, is it cast or not ? If it's cast it's ok. The hose is probably plastic or paper (what I saw from the photo). The "marpuç" (handle) and the joint part is not in a good quality.

I want to write some fundamental specifications of hookahs (nargile) ;
- "Ser" (the metal body) should be cast (stainless steel, nickel) but brass ones are not good.
- Hose should be real leather (generally goat)
- "Marpuç" (handle) and bit should be made with very hard and stable woods (generally Cornelian Cherry or European cornel (Cornus mas))
- Transparent glass
- Big and fired clay "lüle" (bowl)

Here's a standart quality 30" hookah.

Is it good or bad to have the inside of the lüle glazed? The inside of my two unglazed bowls have a blackened surface that I have not been able to remove.

From this point the bowl looks like a normal pipe but a little bit different. After using a bowl for example with apple flavored tobacco you may use it with other suitable flavored tobaccos (e.g. cinnamon, etc.) this may give you a different taste experience, it's just about your palette. Or you may use the bowl for a particular flavor. Generally a hookah smoker has at least 10-12 bowls. Also, I know people using different hoses and marpuçs for different flavored tobaccos. Glazed bowls considered as beginner bowls, because they're mostly smaller and easy to clean. After cleaning, there're no tobacco residuals in the bowls. This provides trying different flavors in one bowl one after another without any taste change. BTW, there's no need to remove the black surface in the bowl. Just clean it well.

Ive tryed to smoke a reg. pipe But it aways chocks me up.

Smoking tobacco through a pipe and smoking through a hookah are two very different "experiences." What kind of problems are you having with smoking the pipe? Maybe we can help you out. I would be very disappointed to hear someone get deterred from the wonderful pleasures of pipe smoking.

I should add that it can be a little difficult to smoke a pipe at first, but this is something that can be remedied through a little practice. This is very common. Learning how to load and pack the pipe is the major culprit. Keeping the tobacco lit is another. After making the char layer, the pipe will smoke with very few relights if any.

This is all good to know! The flavors mixing from previous uses is what led me to buy extra bowls, they're very inexpensive, about $3 US each. I also bought an extra hose, I don't remember what I paid for it, but it was less than $10 US. I guess the black surface will stay! My next step was going to be putting the bowls in a fire or in a furnace at about 700 F.

Khalil Mamoon Pipes are well spoke of on the hookha forms. These are mostly young ppl. The pipes are stainless steel and welded. Is there a pipe that you can recomend for around $60 or $70. I dont see much on Turkish pipes.

I searched e-bay but, they're very different than we're using here, very unfamiliar to me.

Helpful links guys! The pictures of the manufacturing process at Elmas Nargile are very interesting! The lathe they're using to clean up the castings is pretty old, holding a smaller chuck in a larger chuck is an old shop kink (short cut) not seen very often anymore. The final product would look very nice in any sitting room!
