Hello everyone,

Just wanted to take the time to introduce myself. I've been lurking and reading for a while. There is so much information, it seems like more than anyone can learn in only one lifetime.

I'm a home gardener and chicken keeper. I've been gardening my whole life, mostly vegetables but I am putting together an orchard of heritage fruit tree varieties. So far I have a couple peaches, an apricot, a nectarine, a cherries and two pears. This year, I'm adding some russet apples, a couple more cherries, more peaches, some plums and figs.

I'll be adventuring into tobacco for the first time this year. I know it's late, but where I am (Sacramento, Ca), our growing season is about 12 months if I plan winter crops correctly, with about 8 months of that ranging from warm to blasting hot. I still have plenty of time for a crop. I'll be trying my hand at a handful of orientals and a couple Burleys and Virginias. I'm sure you can tell from that list that I'm predominantly a pipe enthusiast, though I do enjoy a good cigar. Eventually, when I figure out proper curing, fermenting and aging of cigar leaf, I'll venture there as well.

I'm glad to be here and look forward to, as the seasons roll, being able to learn from and also contribute to the forum.

Happy growing!

You get some good heat in the valley there, just don't over fertilize and have well-drained soil with water at hand, You'll do very well.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the heads up. Sacramenro sits on what was historically a flood plain so I do have some pretty heavy soil. I guess I have some work cut out for me.

As a landscaper, my crew would make topsoil by passing clay, washed sand & peat-moss thru a rock crusher:
40% + 40% + 20%, more or less.
Hope that helps!
