Hey everybody Screenname is Michibacy, real name is Jeremy.

Currently live in Lansing, grew up about an hour and a half away out in the country, full time student, employee at a farm equipment distributor and small business owner.

Started growing tobacco 2 seasons ago, small plot now and hope to have a much larger crop in a few years.

I love farming, technology, cars, hunting, radioactive substance recovery and examination and pretty much anything one can be classified as a nerd by...

Feel free to drop me a jingle if you got any questions!

if it lies under the rating for hazmat removal, I try and recover and research it, such as when people learn most smoke detectors are radioactive, old glow in the dark clocks etc. I tag it, bag it and take it home to add to my collection

Is there such a thing as "cumulative low dose" radiation? Is it a long term hazard? I used to scrape yellow "water bleed" stains off the rock cuts for roads in eastern PA. They were hot enough to increase clicks on a Geiger counter but not glow in the dark.

Yeah that is relatively harmless, EVERYTHING is radioactive just to what extent is the issue. Don't ingest it, and your body can recover from it usually (for house hold radioactive substances) It also depends on what kind of radiation you come in contact with. Just remember you don't get rid of the radiation, every bit effects you some how.

Yeah. I used to work with a hard beta source. We all had to wear radiation badges that were changed each week. One week they supplied one extra badge and as a joke we put in in the source chamber for about 10 minutes. The report came back "all clear". (We changed monitoring companies.)

As an aside, an ordinary Pyrex beaker or test tube exposed in the source chamber for about 10 minutes would turn a real pretty shade of red/purple. The secretaries were all bugging us for them to go on their desks. Different exposure times would vary the color density. Oh Yeah, as I remember the sample weight was about 0.5 gm.. The chamber was lead and concrete and weighed about 1100 lbs.

Welcome, Jeremy. I am not far away from you - I live in Oakland county. This year is the first for planting tobacco and it is nice to know members that live in the same climate zone. I'll trade some extra seeds that I have with you for some U-235.

I might trade my left nut (yup the Walnut on the left...sitting out on the table) for some U-235... Haha

I was just thinking the same thing! I haven't seen many farmers up here of tobacco, though, I did go to Adrian A year or so ago and a guy had a small (probably 1 acre) plot and a small tobacco barn set up, was pretty cool to see
