Hello
I have taken quite some time off rolling cigars. Just started back up last month.
I purchased pelo d'oro seco and ligero last year.
Last summer I tried working with these 2 tobaccos with a very bitter result.
I revisited these about 3 weeks ago, again bitter. I'm trying all sorts of wrapper and binder but the bitterness is very in your face.
My questions
Has anyone else found these tobaccos to be bitter?
Could it be just my personal taste?
Is there anything that can be fine to get rid of that flavor.
Thanks

I found the Pelo d'Oro seco to be consistently delightful. I tend to minimize my use of any ligero, although I did not detect bitterness in the Pelo d'Oro ligero.

Scroll down the listing page on WLT to read the 3 reviews.

I’ll check my blend notes and see what other combos worked with the Pelo D’Oro leaf.
1 off the top of my head is:

W- WLT Besuki (no longer available) May try Sumatra
B- WLT Dom. Olor
F- 1x WLT Pelo D’Oro Ligero
1x WLT Piloto Cubano Viso
1x WLT Dom. CV Seco

"Bitter" is sometimes difficult to define. On the tongue, bitter sensation (toward the sides and rear of the tongue) is generated by a high pH (high alkalinity), which can be eliminated by blending with less alkaline leaf, or by adding acidity. Also, some terpenes create a sensation that might be considered bitter, but only in some people. These terpenes are volatile, but sometimes require three or more years of airing to dissipate.

I have some cv black ligero in the mail. I'll try that.
The cigars I have tried it with have been well rested and all the components were in appropriate case when assembled.
Perhaps I'm just an odd ball and something doesn't agree with me.
I'll roll another one or three and put them away for a few months.

Just curious, did you resolve the bitter bitterness with a different blend? Quite some time ago, I tried using some “mojo” when bringing my leaf up to case for rolling. It was a blend off rum, pineapple juice, and vanilla if I recall correctly. Smells good when you spray it and has no perceptible taste when you smoke the associated leaf but the acidity counters the high pH of the leaf to some extent and smooths out the smoke.

I also get a pungent bitterness(like a blood/iron, bad venison aftertastes) in the Pelo Oro Ligero, but a very pleasant sweetness from the Seco. But I don't not like it, Im having fun trying to find a blend where it mixes in nice. T13, Corojo seco, toro seco and pelo oro Ligero is a nice lil blend. Also blends well with piloto cubano.

I ended up blending the PD'O ligero with Nicaraguan viso and seco. It takes the edge off the bitterness and I find brings out a sort of bittersweet chocolate vibe.
Also goes well with traditional corojo viso.
I havnt played much with the pelo d'oro seco but I'm sure I can find a good match for it
Yes! I think that's one of the best characteristics the Pelo Oro ligero can have with the right blend.

If you can find suitable wrapper and binder within Pelo Oro seco, and make an entire cigar out of it, you are in for a real treat.
