I made a second batch of Cavendish. I steamed this batched for 3 extra hours...8 total. It is much less harsh than the first batch. I also used a pretty generous amount of vanilla flavoring, but not directly on the tobacco. Instead I poured it into the water and tried to "steam infuse" the flavor. I wasn't expecting much but am pleasantly surprised by the outcome. It definitely absorbed some of the aroma, but lightly so. Anywho, here are some pics...

Good looking batch of Cavendish. Those Swedish Mora knives are handy also. I keep one on the four wheeler as a patch knife.

Hi there JMG
The vanilla flavouring in the water works well for me as well. 10-12 hrs in the slow cooker I have found to be the best time for me.

Yeah, Mark, I definitely think 10-12 hours would have been better. This particular leaf that grows where I live has a pretty strong "green" taste so I think it would have benefited from a longer steam time.

Knucklehead, the Mora knives are really great...especially for the price. I think I paid about 16 bucks for the one in the picture and it has served really well for over three years now. Also, I really love the simple hard-plastic case they come with that have the belt clip.

Darren, definitely give it a try. It was a fun project.

Jmg have you tried a vanilla pod ! you should be able to get them out there. I have had some good times up in Rabaul. Cavendish has got to be far better than that Beetle Nut, or the Kava LOL. Also what strain of tobacco are you growing over there. I have seen some from PNG on the Grinn data base

I haven't tried it yet, but definitely thought about it. You are absolutely right about being better than buai, but than again pretty much anything is! I seriously don't understand how that stuff every caught on. I have absolutely no idea what strain of tobacco this is. I live in a super remote village in the Central Mountain range and I just planted whatever the people had.
