Some of us (myself included) have rather small plots, which include other vegetables, herbs, flowers etc. In olden time gardening it was normal practice to grow companion plants, what are companion plants for tobacco?

Best companions are carrots, alliums, mints (basil, oregano, etc.)
Best to avoid are beans, black walnuts, corn, fennel, dill, brassica (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.)

Care to elaborate on why you think those particular plants are beneficial or not?

If I were to avoid anything it might be other members of the Solanacae family, which could potentially foster insects like horn worms or diseases such as PVY.

I would think inoculated Bush beans would be good to fix nitrogen and shade out weeds?

My plot was recovered from a dense growth of the most evil plant on earth, shrub honeysuckle, (not the vine) and the soil had not seen a single photon from the Sun in years. I sprayed miracle grow on the plot, though my brother, who has grown bacca all his life, said I'd get laughed out of the county if I told anyone I used the stuff. The weeds grew wild with orgasmic fury. They became the nurse crop. I noted to the agent that nothing was attacking the tobacco, as it was covered in lady bugs, predatory wasps that eat horn worms, walking sticks and preying mantises. The agent, who get's a kick out of my experiments said to hold off on applying the Orthene as it would kill of the good guys. Oddly the weeds had been getting massacred by the bugs while the bacca was left alone. I weeded the patch a week or so ago, and I see today some bug damage, and the good guys are gone. However, the plants seem to have doubled in size since I weeded them.

Now thats what I call a companion plant!! Actually, the No. 3732 has a taste of Magnum hops, if you like a good ipa beer, you might want to try this variety next year. I didn't get a ton of leaves and only have two medium sized plants and another one I call a spinster (barely hanging on the leaves are punny). Otherwise, I'd send out a sample to try.
