At smokingpipes.com, Cornell & Diehl bulk and tinned tobaccos are now 20% off, until 17 NOV 2020. One of the features of this particular site is that it lists the ingredients in each blend (though not usually the blend percentages). For most blends, the discounted price is $30.68 per pound.

TINNED:
BULK:

Unless you have no way to shred tobacco, it's not worth buying most individual blending ingredients (e.g. shredded Virginia Bright, shredded Latakia, shredded perique), even at 20% off. You can do much better buying the whole leaf from WLT.

I was fond of a number of C&D blends maybe two decades ago. This evening, I spent some time looking in detail at the listings for those favorite blends. What disappointed me (in the sense of not being likely to take advantage of the current sale) is that every favorite blend is something that I already make myself. I would be purchasing only convenience.

How do you see the base tobaccos to make blends? They say they don't put casing on them, but I don't think they don't put PPG or glycerin on them. What opinion do you have?

All commercial tobacco that I am aware of currently uses either glycerin or propylene glycol (or both) in order to suppress fungal growth and increase shelf life. This includes C&D.

A lot of people complain about Gawith and Hoggarth, and Samuel Gawith tobacco arriving with mold in them, and it's been my experience that they dry out really fast, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were the only ones that don't use humectants. Oh, and different brands of Semois.

I admit that I find it difficult to determine if a particular commercial blend uses casing--unless I smoke some of it. A couple of decades ago, C&D was not using any casing. The company was sold to its current corporate bosses, and now cases everything. GL Pease posted in his own FAQ 8 years ago that none of his blends are cased. But subsequent posts by him indicate that casing is just dandy at the "proper" amount. So these change. Every British brand of tinned pipe tobacco used to be casing free, but many of these (e.g. Dunhill, Rattray's, etc.) have been made in recent years in "Europe" (likely Denmark), and are noticeably cased. I can no longer smoke them, since I taste the casing. All of the recent blends from Russ Ouellette (like the reprise of John Cotton's No. 1&2) are cased--and I taste it.

So this is a moving target for me. The Manil Semois was dry as a bone, and uncased.
