Will Deer eat the leaves off the Tobacco plant? I had planted some pumpkins in the cow pasture and they didn't touch them, but the Watermelon and cantaloupe were eat down to nothing. Just wonder if I need to high fence it or not.

I don't know if deers eat the tobacco leaves but I saw quails eating tobacco leaves. I found some quails with closed eyes, they all have pus in their eyes. Perhaps they became blind.

Depends on your deer I guess because some guys have deer lineuplike seniors at an early bird special for their tobacco and others just have a nibble taken out of a single leaf

I am surrounded by white tail deer. Shortly after I planted my tobacco, they walked through the patch but did not damage any plants. Once the plants got a little taller, they didn't walk through it at all.

That's what I'm hoping for Ray. I just went our and shined the light around the house and saw 8 deer and ran one small buck out of the yard. My yards has about 6 persimmon trees in the edge of it. Saw 2 opossums and a coon in the trees last night.

Well its deer season here in my part of KY . Gun season starts next Saturday WHO WHOO .

I have had no problems with deer eating tobacco .

A few days ago I did have a problem with my Amish neighbors goats . My son came home to find a tobacco barn full of goats . I counted 48 my son counted 47 goats .
They eat the he!!!! out of tobacco they could reach .I like to get along with my neighbors but this Amish man has done rubbed me wrong more than a few times .He has lived here for almost a year now .
These goats roam all over all the neighbors farms .
I wonder if there is a goat season in KY and what the bag limit is .I hear they are good eating .

as far as deer eating tobacco I have had no problems. As far as the taste of goat it is not too bad. If you like venison you will like goat.Just stay away fron the old billygoats, they can get pretty rank.

Yes I am.

A guy on another forum said "If deer start eating my tobacco they will star in my next venison supper for fifteen or so."

I have mule deer in my yard everyday. When I planted mine they ate a couple leaves off but left them alone after that. I think they were just curious.

Game Wardens stay pretty busy here, I work for the US Forest Service, and know all the Game Wardens. And Have never seen one on my property. Our County is owned by the Government or 80% of it anyway. They seem not to care to much about whats happening on private land, to much other stuff to worry about in this County. We are in the top 25 of the poorest Counties in America.

Goat is really good when cooked right! There is a little burger joint down in the TX hillcountry that just cooks goat (cabrito) burgers - I try to stop there whenever I'm down that way playing western swing.... wish I could do both much more often! Cubans also have a great way with goat.

As for deer, I wouldn't want to encourage anything of questionable legality, but for those of you in more urban and tight quarters, where the deer are eating your gardens and you can't shoot them..... There are a couple of sellers on ebay that sell hunting quality, small but powerful, crossbows that shoot small arrows called bolts. I may have, long ago, once climbed into a roof (so I'd be shooting down, with no danger of hitting anything other than the deer or the ground) to take care of such a problem.

Convenient if the animal drops dead on the spot. It'd be much more likely for it to run off with said bolt and finally bleed out in a neighbor's yard. I wouldn't risk that.

I remember years ago in New York State when State Troopers and game wardens routinely delivered road dead and confiscated deer to prisons and old age homes. No more. Now the farms adjacent to the prisons, used prisoners and delivered all there produce directly to the prisons have been shut down. The cost of feeding prisoners has gone up about five times and the farmers who ran the farms are scrabbling to find work.
