Is the DelGold considered a "white stem" variety? Interesting that the stem veins are so much lighter colored than the rest of the leaf. Should make it a breeze to air cure? Just wondering, may have to add it for next year.

Del Gold is a flue cured variety. The high nicotine comes from the fact that it's a cross between Virginia and Rustica, IIRC (If I remember correctly).

My impression is that groundhogs (woodchucks) don't like tobacco. One of my tobacco beds is only 15 feet from a groundhog burrow. I see the little guys all the time. They've never touched the tobacco. (I do know that they will eat habanero peppers!)

That's good news! Because if they eat raw Habaneros pepper spray won't work. That's wild that they eat them. I only ate a raw Habanero once.

The subject of my observation only ate raw Habaneros once, then my son shot him. They were his Habaneros.

Here are some updated pictures. Things are going well. We have had a long stretch of ideal tobacco growing weather, sunny, highs in the mid nineties, lows in the mid seventies, no rain for five days. You know the weather is getting weird when we are getting idea tobacco weather in Massachusetts and they can't grow it this year in North Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, etc.

The plants from BigBonner that were planted later (June 6) are about to take off. From the front, a row of Bursa, a row of Ottoman (with one Xanthi Yaka on the right), another row of Bursa, a row of Bolivian Black Criollo, and a row of TN 90 Burley:

One Sucker - a very odd looking plant. I like the way it looks, though. It's already got flower buds and not much height.

Hungarian Baiano. VERY productive:

Looking great.
Yet another spectacular looking African Red picture. Will most likely be on my grow list next year........especially if it smokes as good as it looks.

Great looking patch and plants Don. Clean around the plants, clean leaves. Your hard work is obvious and seems to be paying off.

That YTB is getting ready to take off. Plant a stake a few inches from the leaf tips so you have a reference point to measure against. When it goes, you'll see 4" or more a day in new growth.

Nice looking patch.

Your One Sucker looks just like mine and mine were about that size too when they budded, I just topped them tonight. It's good to know that I can be relatively certian that the varieties I have are true by comparing them to others who are growing the same.

I like that Del Gold as well. In my patch they are the biggest in leaf and hight and leaf number (though I think the burley might surpass it in leaf number at its maturity). Del Gold will always have a special place in my patch since it was the first tobacco I grew....Man that sounds corny....I might as well be talking about a woman. :)

It's a nice patch you got there.

The real question is: which way do the One Sucker tops spiral, and do they spiral the opposite way in New Zealand?
