A co-worker has a dad that recently retired and thought raising meat goats would be fun. Anyway he's got a lot on the way and previously he just took em to auction but I was asking the daughter if he'd do a private sale, and apparently it's a pain in the ass due to bureaucracy to sell meat, so if have to buy it on the hoof.

So I was wondering if you still pay per pound normally when it's covered in fur and full of waste? If so what would a good price be?

I would also have to get it into plastic wrapped portions before the wife got home, because she once had a friend with a pet goat or some shit like that. I'm thinking I could buck the 50-75lbs or whatever the hanging weight will be in about half an hour tho so that shouldn't be an issue as long as they don't need to hang and age like a deer.

So what do you think? Something I can do on the sly while wife is at work and how much should it cost?

75-95 mebbe. depend on the size of the goat. You could do the basic breaking 1/2 and hour but have to be damn good to butcher the whole thing and deal with the leftovers in that time!
I like goat fresh, but you could just chuck the packages in the chiller to age up a bit before you freeze.
Goat makes the best curry.

Ha Smokes can you get a friendly butcher friend to butcher it for you It would save a bit of time. I have done a few lambs before, but a goat!!! what end to start chopping first. I agree with Frozenthunderbolt it makes the best curry you can have.

I raised pigs in the past and took them to the butcher. I was tempted to butcher them myself but figured I'd leave more meat on the carcass than in my freezer. Call around, there's bound to be a butcher that actually butchers animals. I also buy a pig and a cow from a local Amish farmer. The Amish sell them by the live weight or the hanging weight. The price works out to be the same because the live weight price is cheaper but after you cut off all the non edible stuff it works out to about the same as hanging weight.

By the way, when I took my pigs to the butcher he had about 50 goats in a pen. He said the Ethiopians from New York city were buying all the goat meat he could butcher.

SA,
goats around here sell by the head at the local auction, a goat large enough to eat can run $30-150, according to size and age. Pigs and hogs, wild and free.

I talk the local grocery store butcher into doing my deer after hours. I trade him some meat and $20.00. That includes the beef fat he mixes with the burger. I've eaten BBQ goat. It's better than Don's possum recipe's.

What kind of cuts are you looking for. I cut all my meat off the bones and butterfly the tenderloin myself. Mainly the butcher just grinds up the rest into burger with beef fat. The burger goes into stews and chili. If you plan to just cube the meat you could do that yourself. Bob just gave you some good advice, too. When we raised cows we only used steers and heifers for meat. You may like "mountain oysters" though, never tried them myself. :p

Years ago a neighbor had a Billy who was one mean critter. But he followed me around gentle as a lamb. I never told them I carried chew in my pocket and would give him a bit now and then. He was NUTS for the stuff. Sweet plug as I remember. -- J

Live weight might be better yourself if you intend to eat the offal as well. Liver kidneys tongue heart i like. Brains, lungs and tripe i don't really enjoy if you salt the skin you could also sell it to a local home tanner for something. Boil the feet for gelatine/stock.
