Living in the wilds of Scotland where growing anything is a challenge. I'm in the process of building a poly tunnel using pallet wood and 2" water pipe (blue pipe) and thought I could grow some tobacco with the vegetables. I'll need to research companion planting.

Just ordered three varieties from The Tobacco Seed Company:
- Dark Burley
- Virginian Gold #2
- Big Gem

The plans for a cosy trash can flue look easy enough so the McGiver in me will enjoy making it.
Who knows how it will turn out but that's part of the adventure.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum. The varieties of tobacco you will be growing are typically in the vague range of 5½ feet tall (~2 meters). And don't forget to add the height of the raised beds, in determining the final height of your tunnel.

For veggies, avoiding co-planting tobacco with other solanaceous species (tomato, potato, eggplant, pepper) will reduce the risk of shared pathogens. Tobacco forms relatively shallow, spreading roots, so straight, deep rooted veggies (e.g. carrots), very early expiring veggies (peas) and short season veggies (e.g. small radish) should be compatible, if not crowded too much.

Thanks for the useful info. Can't wait for the seeds to arrive, just been reading the seeding section of Key Forums.

Welcome from me in NZ. I like your idea of the tunnel. Looking at it you might, if it's possible, build it so you have more height. I'll post a couple of pics to show what I mean.

Dadd's baccy plot.jpg I am in there the crop is Vaginia Gold. It may not grow this tall in your country, but as you have it in a tunnel it might.

IMG_20200628_120819_1~2.jpg This is what I meaning about the design, you would have more headroom. It's going to be my curing shed. See Oldfellas kiln build. Best of luck with your grow and start a grow blog with plenty of pics.

Thanks Oldfella,
The back wall is 8' based on an plasterboard/drywall pallet standing on it's short end. Our place is on top of a hill with views of Edinburgh, the downside with views is wind. I'm concerned if I make it any higher, I'll need a serious bit of construction, not a Heath Robinson pallet-and-screws job. Snow is normally not an issue, this year we had a couple of weeks of slushy stuff but nothing significant. 2010, was the last big dump.

Is there interest in seeing the poly-build? At the moment my biggest cost was the 50mm 2" water pipe, £60 for 25m, it arrived on Friday. I've a rubix cube of jobs, so I need those out the way before I can start this build. I'm hoping it's next week. The plastic cover will be non UV plastic, because of Brexit and covid, I'm told the earliest is late May/june for deliveries of 'proper' poly tunnel UV stable plastic....too late. When Murphy's Law is applied, the non-uv plastic will have be replaced at the most inconvenient time.

thanks for the welcome

As you begin construction, feel free to start a new thread (either as a Grow Blog or in the category Growing Tobacco), and post photos of your steps along the way. That will make it easier for members to locate in the future.

In looking at your rough sketch, I notice a lack of cross-ties for the hoops. Perhaps one long cross-tie with a single diagonal brace at one end would brace it sufficiently for the wind.

Yeah views and wind seem to be a match made heaven. I live on a mini peninsula with the ocean on both sides of my house. Although I have picked the best spot for my baccy plant's I still need to use wind break netting, great views though. Re your tunnel, you can always alter it later if it don't work. Listen to Bob, he's always got good advice.
