Hello to all you fellow smokers and thank you for letting me join in.

I'm a subsistence hunter/fisherman/logger (read: river-rat) living in a remote village in the Middle Yukon valley, one of (many) regions of AK accessible only by air and water.
A friend had suggested i join this valuable resource knowing of my outrageous attraction to tobacco. Indeed the collective wisdom here was obvious after only a few minutes of reading, and i can think of Many questions to ask of this august assembly and will, once i read what's already been written so as to not waste anyone's time, and thank you all in advance.

My smoking experience is Very great,so is my consumption of the weed, and my knowledge of growing it-but especially of curing the home-grown product-practically zilch.
Tobacco will grow here ok in spite of my dwelling less than 100 miles from the Arctic circle, and i have grown some once from the seed sent by a benevolent pilgrim, only to Utterly fail to turn it into anything smokable afterwards for lack of even the basic info.

The tobacco that i prefer (as in really can't seem to find any acceptable substitute for) is Bugler, and i probably must apologize for such low-brow taste but here we have it. From what little i understand it's an American Light Burley of some general sort,+ whatever beastly treatment they subject it to at the factory process.

Frankly i don't hold out much hope to being able to completely substitute it with something i can grow+cure myself as i half-suspect that it's the treatment that i find so comfortingly attractive (addictive?:)).

But again,i look forward to starting to educating myself on the matter so as to try to ask some questions of the knowlegeable folk here.

Thanks again and cheers, Jake

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to read the New Growers' FAQ, and scan through topics of interest in our Index of Key Forum Threads. Both are linked in the menu bar. I'll yield to other members for advice on your Bugler quest.

When you begin your new grow for 2023, be sure to start your own grow log (with photos!) in the Grow Blog forum.

Welcome to FTT. Once you’ll try real tobacco (I.e. without chemicals and reconstituted “tobacco”), it will be difficult to smoke industrial stuff again. Almost everybody here joined the forum in hopes to replicate their favorite smoke (or chew, or snuff) and ended up smoking something way different and waaaay better. I tried to replicate the “Camel taste” with my first blends, and soon discovered that the taste I was looking for was… licorice, added as a chemical sweetener (together with ammonia and a host of other stuff). Tried to make my own licorice sweetener with proper licorice root and vodka, but it tasted nothing like Camels, it tasted, of course, of natural licorice that has nothing to do with the chemical “licorice flavor”… long story short, i soon abandoned my Camel project and begun to blend my homegrown baccy in order to obtain what really suited MY taste. After years, I can say that my once beloved Camels were… junk, if compared to what I roll in my papers nowadays.

Thank you Sir (-s, since i started typing),and will do.

There's a nice long dark and cold period for reading at my Lat., but as to growing i doubt i'd be able to start in the coming season. We've no soil to speak of here, and i'm super-busy with a constr. project for someone that'll leave me no time starting right after the worst of winter.
But yep, will photograph the process once i start.

Thank you,and it sounds like a great turn of events-i'd Really look forward to such results if i can get equally lucky.

That "Camel taste" biz is an interesting concept. I too always really liked "straights",and over the years (based on god knows what info) have convinced myself that it was from the addition of "black" (also from what i hear called "Latakia") type of tobacco strains. Similar stuff that makes "Galois" and "Gitanes" so ...raunchy :)
Many moons ago while traveling in the Basque country and cut off from my usual brand i was smoking the Spanish-made "Bisonte",similarly blended with that "black" stuff, and a very decent non-filter cigarettes i thought , (except when someone asked me for a smoke and i offered a pack of Bisonte they'd most often say: "No thank you,i'll ask someone else!":))

The "black" in some of those potent, European cigarette brands is dark air-cured.

Since it will be a while before you grow any leaf, you might want to have a look at what you can purchase from Whole Leaf Tobacco (WLT). Just click the banner ad, or go to

Typical American cigarettes are a mixture of flue-cured Virginia (~60%), burley (~30%) and an Oriental (~10%). Do have a look at their cigarette tobacco blend kits.

Welcome Jake!
You have come to the right place…. I am new here myself but have learned a lot about the curing process in a very short time thanks to the good folks here at the forum!
