Wellcome , I got a box with 1/4" hardware cloth in the bottom that makes a good flake. but the Powermatic is a lot better. Ive gumed it up a few times but if you get the case right you can run a few pds. with no trouble. Tryin to bring it up to case to fast is how I gumed itup. Its a tank an if you gonna get into whole leaf its a must have. 7 or8 store bought cartons pays for it.

MarcL,
I'm in Bayonne. I guess you meant you are originally from Garfield, and live in Maryland now? Or is the location on your profile outdated? Oh, and thanks for the welcome.
You got it right the first time. I'm in Maryland now. Funny you mention Old San Juan. When I was on Summit Avenue last summer getting gas at the Delta, I saw The Hackensack location across the parking lot and had to go in just to look at the menu. Looked good but didn't get anything but, I drove by it last month I was thinking I really need to check it out. Didn't know there was one on 46.

Marc,
I guess you saw my original reply to you, before I looked at your profile and realized that you were no longer in Garfield, and hence edited my post. Do you come back to north Jersey often?

grgfinney, Brown Thumb, and Boboro:
Thanks for the welcome!

Knucklehead,
Thanks for your answer to my earlier question. I don't think I want to cut 4 or 5 lbs. of tobacco all at once, and I was thinking the "shelf life" would be longer if the leaves were cut/shred as needed, rather than all at once. So long as the leaves don't become dry and brittle, and therefore difficult to cut, I see no reason to cut/shred everything right away.

By the way, I am aware that the midrib stem has to be removed first!

I also suppose that I need to give serious thought about investing in a Powermatic. Only a fool disregards the advice of those more experienced than himself.

FmGrowit (Don?),
Thank you for your welcome . . . and for referring me to FTT. I must say, I'm impressed by how many people have already welcomed me.

You got it. I like to "Go Advance" when replying, I'm able to "Preview Post" before the reply emails go out.
Not so much. I'd like to get up there more often. Got a lot of family up there but, there were a couple of funerals.

When the leaf gets dry, just mist with a little water and it will rehydrate. I shred in low med case, which is how we describe the moisture content of tobacco. Low case is dry and crackly but not crumbly, med. is a little more moist, high case is pretty wet.

Marc,
Boy, do I hear what you're saying. I've lost count of how many times I've gone to north-central Massachusetts, just shy of the New Hampshire border, over the last ten years for the funerals of relatives.

Knucklehead,
Thanks again!

Istanbulin,
Thanks for the welcome. Does your user ID mean that you live in Turkey? If so, you might look at the post I left in the thread your started about Izmir, the city, not the tobacco! I spent 3 weeks in Turkey in 1993, and was one of the best vacations I've ever had. By the way, I have no plans to starting growing tobacco, I'll buy the whole leaves from Don. After all, I'm a lifelong "city boy" -- I'm no farmer! lol.

DonH,
My relatives live in Fitchburg and neighboring towns, Gardner, Westminster, and Lunenburg. I used have an uncle and aunt in Leominster, but they passed away in 1997. Most of the deceased members of my family are buried at the Cimetiere de St.-Antoine-de-Padoue in Shirley. I have more distant relatives in New Hampshire and possibly Maine, and in Canada, of course.

Jekylnz,
Thanks for the welcome, and the compliment!

Yes, there's an Istanbulite here. I wish you have a chance to grow some, it's the real fun. Get rid off that city guy and put your hands into dirt. I'm living in the middle of a big and crowded city too but I found somewhere to do it. Actually it was not easy but I hope I'll do it again next year.

Well that really is my neck of the woods (Townsend). You described it just the way I do when people ask. N. Central Mass near the NH border.

Welcome aboard Winston, Don's tobacco tastes like a real cig should. Not everyone needs a flue, just a flue.

Indianjoe,
Thanks for the welcome!
Incidentally, I had an uncle in Lynn, Massachusetts who called himself "Indian Joe" (he passed away in 2006). My father and his siblings are about 10% Mi'kmaq Indian (which makes me about 5%), and Joseph was my uncle's middle name. The Mi'kmaq inhabited Nova Scotia, about half of New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

Uh, Oh, the pet cemetary was in a Mi'kmaq burial ground!

My Dad was born in Lynn. But that uncle was born in Vermont. When my Dad was growing up, the family moved around Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. All the moving finally came to an end after my grandfather, who was originally from Quebec, bought a farm in Lunenburg, Massachusetts.
