Long time listener, first time caller. Picked up cigars as a deployment habit, and kind of stuck with an after I got home. Picking up pipe as well.

Looking at the kits on WLT. Is it really as easy as getting the kit, cutting it into ribbons, and mixing it up in a mason jar? After paying 10 bucks an ounce for a slimy store bought, this sounds like the biggest no-brainer ever.

Appreciate all of the great information I’ve gotten up to this point, and really looking forward to filling the barn rafters this summer. Cheers.

Welcome to the forum. Check the New Growers' FAQ, and scan through the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads. Both are linked in the menu bar.

That's it. It's not as easy as purchasing commercial blends, but you end up with a far better product. I don't own a shredder. All my pipe blends are shredded with a mezzaluna blade. And the mezzaluna serves as my chaveta for cigar rolling.

If you start a grow this year, feel free to begin your own grow log in our Grow Blogs section.

Thanks Bob! From what I’ve read, I could do well with a pound of WTL Latakia and a patch of assorted home grown. I have a property that came with an old (meaning “well ventilated”) barn and a fridge that could find duty as a kiln.

Looking at cherry red, prilep, ytb for pipe, and criollo to try a puro cigar. If there are better varieties for a beginner or a fifth variety that the group would recommend I’d love any collective wisdom folks would throw my way. This area has a tobacco history, so I think good results are possible. Your garden pics are inspirational!

As it will be about this time next year before you have some smokable home grown tobacco, I highly recommend picking up a few lbs of leaf from WLT to play with to help you figure out what to grow / what your flavor preferences are. Highly recommend their cigar blend kits also.

There are several pipe blending recipe books available to forum members in the "Key Forum Threads" link at the top of the page.

Welcome and have fun!

Going to start with the WLT American and Turkish. Probably smoke a little of each variety by itself to know what I’m tasting. Found a deal on bulk stems too, so I may try my hand at carving bowls from the mesquite I’ve been cursing.
Welcome to the forum. Lots of good advice to be had. And thank you for your service!
