So yeah, a generic introduction I guess, I grow my own food in tires, and I'm growing some Rustica tobacco right now. This will be my second try at tobacco. I breed most of my own vegetables and flowers, and I'm planning on starting a tobacco collection and seed saving, as well as breeding.
I hope I didn't forget anything important...

Welcome to FTT. I visited the will-AM-et valley years ago. Pretty country. You should do well with tobacco. How much space do you have?

I've got plenty of space, maybe as much as 1/4 acre in small patches here and there. problem is I've only got 4 plants left, I've had them growing in a window since February, and the ferrets killed most of them. They love to dig things up.

Welcome TOO. A good place to start is the Tobacco Growing FAQ's on the header at the top of the page. I'm not sure how long your growing season is, so if it's too late to start more seed, BigBonner has seedlings almost ready to sell. They'll be ready to set in the ground when you get them, and he has several varieties for cigarettes or cigars. Seedlings run from $1.50 - $2.00 depending on variety. Several of us will be buying plants from him and they are really nice.

BigBonner (this forum) has seedlings for sale at reasonable prices. I bought some last year and they were completely satisfactory. If you need, PM him. He's fair and really easy going.

I heard somewhere (rumor?) that most tobacco plants are innoculated with a weak form of tmv, is that true? I have a lot of other nightshades I might worry about if I start exchanging anything.

Inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus? That's a rumor I have never heard. Can't say for sure that TMV doesn't exist in the Willamette Valley but I know it doesn't exist here. Most of the diseases and pests others have to battle don't exist here in the NW. And not much of anything bothers rusticas. They are nearly bullet proof.

We grow a lot of different flowers and vegetables too. What all do you grow?

And welcome to the forum

Sky

We've got mostly edibles, peas, peppers, cabbage, etc. I've got some california poppies, and a floral poppy I germinated from 50 year old seed.. As far as medicinal, I have camomile, pennyroyal, N. rustica, douglas fir, lavendar.
I've got a pretty big seed collection in storage.

Getting a 50 year old seed to sprout is impressive, especially if it wasn't kept in a freezer all that time. Do you know what type it is? Got a pict? We grow several types of poppies. We do pretty good with some varieties and have a hell of a time getting others started.

We grow all sorts of vegetables. Too many to list. We try to grow most of what we eat and grow a lot for seed. All of our crops are grown organically. We are pretty lucky here in that we don't have many pests to deal with, except deer. Some things have to do inside deer proof fencing or they will eat them to the ground. Deer won't touch tobacco though. One of the few things they don't eat.

We are just getting starting with medicinal herbs. Still lots to learn about them. We have loads of wild Arnica growing around here. They are in full bloom now. Cool plants. We are going harvest some seeds this year and try transplanting a few into our garden. Dunno how well that will work. We tried transplanting some wild Lupin and it didn't like it at all.

Have you considered adding venison to your regular diet? I'm sure BarG would help out. :D

That sounds really great actually. I really don't feel right germinating the rest of these aztec tobacco, partly because I'm unimpressed with the germination rate, and because my sister is asking for them. Her husband wants to get in touch with his aztec heritage.. lol
