Greetings!

Figured it was time for me to cease lurking and come out into the light.

I’m new to leaf tobacco use and blending although I’m not new to pipe and cigarette smoking per se, have had pipes off and on since 1982, but since I’m about to enter “Codger” status, figured I’d get back to using them. Have rebuilt my arsenal of pipes since I threw out all prior ones, except my very first one the “Glacier” (loved it as it was the name of the 1st icebreaker I was assigned to), saw it around the basement a few months ago, just wish I could find it (under tons of leather and other stuff) and put it into rotation. Also, am just now learning to “sip” vs “freight train” my smokes, my what a difference it does make.

Anyway, have been reading all the great threads on this site and have even picked up a lot of new things and info as well. I’m an aromatic fellow and am attempting to blend my own to come up with the “perfect” one. I must have more than 50 pouches and several pounds of various leaves down in my workshop that I’ve bought in the past couple of months. I’m sort of the like the cartoon dog that when someone shouts “SQUIRREL” I lose focus and shift to another item. My other main love (currently) is leather-working and have began making pipe and tobacco pouches, so always trying to stay busy.

Seems that there are only really three (3) whole leaf tobacco selling sites that I have found, and yes I have visited each and bought from them. Not being biased or trying to earn any "Brownie Points," I think WLT has the best delivered products from the three sites. However, the other two sites do have other leafs that WLT does not, that if WLT were to carry, I'd def shift. But WLT also carries leafs that the other two don't, so it's a business student's dream. Also, I have sifted away from "Store Bought" cigarettes for a couple of reasons (1) added chemicals and (2) state keeps adding more and more taxes which cause the cost of a pack to continue to rise.

Again, I really enjoy reading everyone’s point of view and chuckle at a few. Lots of great experience going on here. If anyone has any recipes that they’d like to share, I’m open. I’m located abut 25 miles south of this great nation’s confused capitol, and always looking to find like minded folks and shops between DC and Richmond, so any ideas would also be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

GW

Sorry. You've got to elaborate on your sailing on ice breakers, or no tobacco for you!

Since you are aromatic, check this thread:

As for which whole leaf site carry which varieties, it is an ever changing inventory, with a pace measured in months.

ha ha ha, I retired from the Coast Guard after 30 years active duty. During my career I had three (three years each) afloat tours on icebreakers, one on the GLACIER (WAGB-4) (my first icebreaker) and two tours (back to back) on the WESTWIND (WAGB-281) Those two ships were the best of the ones I was stationed on. Also did afloat tours on two buoy tenders SALVIA (WLB-400) and WHITE PINE (WLM-547).

IRT the different varieties, while there may be differences, I still lean toward WLT for 95% of the leaf....

Yes, saw that thread and have used it as the jumping off point and modify.

Thanks for the huge assist!

Cheers!

Ha ha ha seems I did not finish my train of thought in regards to your question about "elaborate on your sailing on ice breakers."
Well long story short, the U. S. Coast Guard is responsible for ice breaking for shipping channels in the United States, Greenland, the North and South Poles to allow supply ships access to U. S. Military bases in those areas (Greenland, the North and South Poles) and for domestic ice breaking in rivers and lakes in the U.S. for commerce vessels. At one time, the Coast Guard had a fleet of eight (8) Polar Ice Breakers, now they are down to two (2) operational ones.
Now the long story, I have been to the North Pole twice (boring deployments) and to the South Pole twice with ports of call in the Pacific/South Pacific (Mexico, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand (multiple times), Tasmania) and along South America (Panama, Peru, Chile, Argentina) then to McMurdo and Palmer Stations Antarctica, among lots of other ports. As I noted earlier, these tours were the highlight of my 30 year career and I wouldn't trade them for anything. I've seen beautiful sunrises, beautiful sunsets, the beauty of the sea on a moonlit night in the middle of the Pacific/Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic, whales, porpoises, sharks, flying fish, sea snakes, typhoons, hurricanes, 40-50 foot seas. In one typhoon off of Tahiti, we lost one of our 26' small boats off the main deck, and had severe structural damage while we were doing a SAR for a U.S. sailing vessel in distress. Unfortunately, all we found from the vessel was debris. Vessel was presumed lost at sea with all souls on board. Have seen some really beautiful things and things that would turn my stomach if I saw it today.
Anyway, it was a privilege and honor to serve this fine nation in the BEST military branch in the U.S.!!!!

Cheers
