Hi Forum!
I started growing this year, originally to make my own snus (swedish style), but hoping also to make som decent rolling tobacco. I ordered rustica and virgina seed (unknown variety) online and started them in february. By early June the night temperature was finally above 0C and the plants that started to crowd my living room could be moved outside. I have about 20 virginias and 4 rusticas. At first the virginias seemed to die as all the leaf wilted and fell of. I think a combination of to cold nights and sunburn during the day caused it. But then as the temp warmed up new growth boost set in and I ended up with 2m high plants with plenty of big leaf (virginias). The rustica handled the cold better and grew at a steady pace all through summer. I started harvesting in early august and still have the top 2-3 pairs of leaf left to harvest by early September. I have made a plastic tent in my loft for air curing that is kept at 28-30C and 66% RH with a humidifier. Fan for circulation. The outside climate at the moment is 6-14C and humidity in the 40s, so needed to get creative. After curing I plan to package the leaf in a plastic bag with a slight vacum and use a sous vide aparatus to ferment for 2-3 weeks in a bucket of water with a constant 50C. Should be interesting! Then test rustica vs virginia taste and properties, split the batch and make some snus and rolling tobacco. Got good seed from this year, and will repeat and expand in 2021. I find tobacco growing a great hobby. Learning everything from agricultural history to biochemistry and about mold. And watching my decisions infuencing what happens to the crop every day. Have also been lurking in the forum to learn and get ideas. Please get in touch if you have any questions or thoughts/ideas on what I am doing.
