Many years ago, the New England Journal of Medicine published a cure that actually works: swallow a teaspoon of granulated sugar quickly, before it can disolve. It apparently irritates the esophagus and stimulates the vagus nerve, which stops the hiccoughs. Probably swallowing a teaspoon of sand would work in a similar fashion. Plan B is to swallow a bunch of air, then burp forcefully, also irritating the esophagus.

I've found that if I force a burp on the rebound of the first hiccup I never get any more hiccups. If I miss it for some reason it always takes me a lot more burping. Good to know about the sugar helping too.

My wife has vasovagal syncope at nights . This only occurs after 1 to 1.5 hours after she goes to sleep . She will wake me up saying I don't feel good .
She will turn blood red in the lower parts of her body and loose all the color in her face .Her hand and feet will be cold as ice and grey looking .
She will pass out and is disoriented and will not want to listen to me .
It scares the hell out of me as sometimes I don't know if she is going to wake back up . She will be really tired and week all the next day .

Doctors say there's nothing they can do for this , If I knew poking a spoonfull of sugar down her would work . I would keep 5 lb by the bed at all times .

I had to google vasovagal syncope to understand a little better, and I really have to say that sounds a lot like what one of my family members were going through. I read this may be caused many different "triggers" so this may be totally different, but what they ended up finding out was they had some sort of brain parasite that was causing it all. Sound freaky, I know, but after taking meds to fight the parasite she now doesn't have any more symptoms.

I'm sorry to hear that you and your wife having to fight with something like that. I know how scary that is. I pray you find cause and cure and health.

I don't believe it is a brain parasite . She has done this for over 15 years now . If it was a parasite I believe it would have worsen by now . We never know when it will happen . It only happens at night . There are several cases of the night time version .
It is something doctors can not figure out . By the time I would get her to a hospital the spells would be over and she would be soo tired all she wants to do is sleep .

Our cure is much more enjoyable. A shot of ruskie' vodka, if they continue, you continue with more vodka, by the time they're done, you don't remember you had any...

A man had nonstop hiccoughs. He went to the emergency room where my brother (who is a physician) gave the man an injection of Thorazine. The hiccoughs stopped almost instantly. Unfortunately, he was too sedated to drive home and he had to rest in the ER until the effects wore off. Surprisingly, people going to the ER for excessive hiccoughs is not so uncommon.

Breaking the cycle of the hiccup (in most cases) eliminates the hiccups. Holding your breathe works as long as you breathe in twice while holding your breathe to replace the air/oxygen that has been consumed while holding your breathe.

If you can't inhale, you can't hiccup. I've coached many people through it and it works every time.

I've heard that scaring people will cure hiccoughs too. Instead of injecting the guy with Thorazine perhaps your brother should have told him what the hospital bill was going to be. That probably would have scared the hiccoughs right out of him..:)
