My name is Danny. I’m from a little spot on the map called Berry, Ky. Yes, it’s as country as it sounds. My family has raised a lot of tobacco over the years. As is with most things, times change. I’ve been a smoker since I was 17 and I’m 50 now, but I knew many years ago that I was more of a mad scientist than casual smoker. Several years ago I began rolling my own cigarettes using various tobaccos and even farm raised that I would scrupulously slice with a utility knife. I’ve used every type roller possible and then I realized I could roll far faster and better by hand. Again, times have changed and I’ve gone from smoking cigarettes to cigars. Anyone that is an everyday heavy smoker knows how expensive that can be if you desire quality smokes. Which is what led me here. I’m going to now process my own cigars in my never ending quest for the best for less. Unfortunately, we don’t have nearly the acreage we used to own but I do plan to grow some of my own plants again. I’m a carpenter by trade, so I’m planning on assembling my own equipment as well. Hopefully we can all impart some knowledge on one another. I’ve already picked up some good ideas on here from reading posts so hopefully I can reciprocate the knowledge. Thanks and have a good day.

Hi Danny and welcome to the forum! Growing & Rolling your own cigars is fun and rewarding. Also, while you are growing your first crop of cigar tobacco, you can refine your rolling skills. I highly recommend the cigar kits at WLT to get you started.

If you have access to your own float tray setup, then the most reliable seed source for cigar varieties is http://northwoodseeds.com/. Unless you smoke two cigars at once, then about 200 plants will supply your entire cigar needs for a year.

If you no longer have access to a greenhouse or float tray system, then you might contact our fellow member @BigBonner, who is in your neck of the woods, and might be able to easily provide you with ready transplants at the proper time.

Today I purchased my first piece of equipment. I know the trend now is stone or stainless but those don’t come equipped with a tuck cutter already installed and I can’t purchase the two for 84 bucks shipped. The cutter will need some oil and I’ll have to fabricate a length stop for the measuring rod. I also have some thin stainless that I can always lay over top if need be.
