I live in the Phoenix area and am interested in learning to roll my own cigars and make chewing tobacco. I finally decided to give growing tobacco in the Arizona desert a shot.
Transplanted a total of 29 plants in the ground on 9/16. I'm running 9
Yellow orinco, 14 yellow twist bud, and 6 little crittenden. I have been a member of this forum for a while now but have never posted. I've learned a lot from reading this forum and hope to learn much more as a more active member.

Welcome to FTT. You are growing some nice cigarette varieties. I think for cigars, you will be much happier with filler and wrapper varieties. Our member Skychaser has some very nice cigar variety seed for sale: Northwood Seeds Retail

The owner of this forum also owns www.wholeleaftobacco.com. He has some excellent whole leaf tobacco for sale. You can start saving money over store bought immediately. For a new roller, you may want to try his cigar blend kits.

May 2011! Holy smokes! You have been a member for a while. Welcome to the living. Feel free to start a log of your growing efforts in the Grow Blogs section. Us folks in the temperate parts of the world love to look at photos of green things during the bleak months.

Good luck with your grow.

welcome!
moderately jealous about your growing season, it is frosting heavily now and soon will stay frozen all day long too!

The melodosio cremosa from WLT was a great kit for me to start with. the sticks got better with a bit of age...so good actually, i only have one left...

look forward to pictures of the greenery!

Welcome, the Yellow Twist Bud and Yellow Orinoco make good chew, but then again almost any tobacco can be made in to a good chew.

Thanks for the warm welcome. The cigar kits look like a good place to start and get some rolling practice.
I'll have to work on getting some pictures of the plants progress posted. Chew is what I'm planning on making with the tobacco I'm growing now and some for cigarettes. Would love to learn to make something like Stokers Tennessee chew.

Welcome. Tobacco seems to grow well here in the as desert. I harvested most of my crop a week ago due to a frost scare that killed my tomato plants but the tobacco made it. Still have my whole ytb crop to harvest, just waiting for my previous harvest to dry. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, this is a great forum.

Thanks BlazedUp ... I'm at higher elevation but will be trying a crop this coming season.

So far, I have gotten my leaf from WLT.com and have been very pleased.

Good to see both of you out here, I'm in the East Valley, SW Chandler. Feel free to PM me any time you want. I've had no problem growing here, but mostly do early spring (start indoors in Jan-Feb), and a fall grow. Like "BlazedUp" said, Just watch out for the frost time. Certain types even seem to pull out of that, like Little Dutch.

To answer CobGuy's question, yes, a Cigar kit from WLT is a good place to start. Glad to have you here!

I do belong to a couple other pipe related forums under the same name ... how about you?

Welcome! Best thing you guys can do is take AZDave up on his offer. Dave is a wealth of knowledge and more importantly a nice guy who loves to help his BOTL any way he can.
