I have partaken in the SPEZ forums, more actively the past month, and was redirected to FTT on growing tobacco.
I am currently growing Burley 21, MD 609, Prilep, Black Sea Samsun, and Cherry Red (Bright Leaf/Virginia). I have 350+ seedlings with leaves currently with them being only a week old.
Count from yesterday:
-32 Prilep
-50 MD 609
-45 Cherry Red
-41 Black Sea Samsun
-82 Burley
I am currently in Arkansas and will have a late harvest with the late start. I am expecting to be harvesting during the month of September.
I am planning to aim this crop at the pipe tobacco side, as it is one of my hobbies. I'm planning to plant the remainder of my seeds that I snagged from Northwood Seeds. I am wanting plant half an acre to an acre full. With my current job I am able to work on the plants in the morning and at night, so I should have enough time planting, harvesting, and curing (a friend will be helping me with this).
I was raised on an Indiana soy/corn and cattle farm and grew bonsais for 4 years before college interrupted it. I am planning to get back into farming in Arkansas, and eventually back in Indiana.
I will be scanning the FTT forums on strains that can handle the higher Arkansas Humidity (at least higher than the Indiana humidity I'm used to experiencing), strains good for Indiana weather, and taking this possibly to a part time level. I'm not sure if there are any specific genres or specific cured leaves are profitable in the states. This is a lot, and with the direction society has taken in tobacco, it will be a mountain to climb, but I will enjoy it.
