Hello all,

Im Kevin from N.W. Arkansas and I was referred here by a friend at the Briar Patch forum. Going to try my hand at growing my own tobacco next year for some enjoyable pipe smoke and maybe some snuff if it turns out well. Not a master gardener or anything but Ive grown tomatoes and a wide array of herbs for different uses so we'll see how it goes.

Go for it. The first to grow baccy in NA wasn't a master gardener either.

Welcome to FTT. No need to be a master gardener to grow tobacco ;) .
Be sure to read the FAQ to be ready.

Im thinking on growing some burley my first year. Does anybody have any ideas on what strain/seeds to buy? Or perhaps anybody with more seeds than they foresee using could send me a little care package. Ive been browsing the seed sites and nothing is really jumping out at me. Probably due to the fact that I dont know what im looking for. Thanks for your time.

Harrow Velvet is a milder, Canadian-developed burley. TN 90 is much fuller, and is common today in Kentucky's tobacco fields. I'd go with the Harrow Velvet for a first burley. Once you figure out how to cure and finish your tobacco, the TN 90 (which I can't smoke straight, because of its strength) would be a good contrast to play with. But by next year, you'll want to add some Oriental and maybe even Virginia for your pipe blending.
