I'm new to both this forum and working with whole leaf tobacco. Years of smoking store bought cigarettes (American Spirits) has got me jaded. I'm not a habitual smoker and only smoke at most three cigarettes a day. When I do smoke ideally I want something that satisfies my senses and carries my mind away for a bit.
Back when I lived in London during the 80's I learned to hand roll cigarettes from Old Hoborn tobacco. When I moved back to the states I couldn't purchase this tobacco. I feel like I've been on the search to recreate my experience with smoking Old Hoborn ever since. Over the years I've tried every brand of rolling tobacco I could find, even the modern Old Holborn tobacco they now sell. Nothing has come close to the original Old Holborn I bought as a teenager.
So I'm here and on a quest to find/create a blend of tobacco that might take me to that same level of enjoyment I once found in store bought hand rolling tobacco.

Welcome to the forum.

I smoked Holborn once or twice about 25 years ago, so I don't think I will be much help.

WLT has a variety of tobaccos for you to play with. Even if you don't completely match it, you will have nothing but good smokes.

I have never smoked Holborn. Here is what I could dredge up.

Old Holborn Hand Rolling tobacco is Golden Virginia Green’s main competitor as a high quality fuller strength tobacco, which has been produced using Dark Virginia tobacco and has very little stalk or birdseye for a smooth flavoursome smoke.

Golden Virginia The Original (Formerly Green) Hand Rolling Tobacco
It is a little too strong for a good number of smokers but any smoker that does smoke it won’t smoke anything else and it is the number one selling hand rolling tobacco in the UK.
The golden Virginia Original is produced from fine cut Virginia Burley and some Oriental leaves for added character.

I have no idea what "Dark Virginia" means.

Thanks for the info Bob.
At the moment I've got Red Virgina Flue Cured, stacked Basma, and Perique. On the way I've got Maryland 609, hand tied Flue Cured Virginia Bright Leaf, and hand tied Flue Cured Virginia Lemon. I should be able to come up with a pleasing blend with these. At the moment I'm smoking 45/45 Red Virginia and Basma + 10 percent Perique. This is really nice smoke. Can't wait to mix things up with the new tobaccos when they arrive.
I'll search around the forum for some blending ideas.

Golden Virginia was my daily smoke. I also smoked Old Holborn, although, not as first choice. This was 30 odd years ago when duty free (cheap) tobacco was a thing and oft avail.

Wasn't as sweet, compared to golden Virginia. Darker colour, robust flavour. Not as robust as Drum or Samson . Like most ryo, they all have unique flavour profiles and one tends to stick to 'their' brand and treat others with disdain.

Good luck on the search, and welcome

Welcome to FTT.
It might be hard to recreate the specific taste of a brand, but I am sure you will have some nice smoke with your own blends.

Totally agree. I'm not attempting to recreate a specific brand. It's an enjoyable smoking experience I'm looking for. And with truly quality tobacco I'm sure I'll easily find this satisfaction.
