Howdy All, joined the forum to learn, especially about prebigbusiness tobacco. The Sherlock Holmes thread was fascinating, also want to know more about Native American tobacco use. Have a great day.

Good morning and let me be the first to welcome.

Where on the beautiful Chesapeake are you? I am here in neighboring Dull-Aware. If you're on the western shore, take a peek at the Virginia Wine and Cigar Trail. Several great members on this board from Virginia and Merryland.

Welcome, Tarot. Native Americans used tobacco ritually, but the "elites" smoked it "recreationally," just like we do. Until mass produced cigarettes came along, tobacco was mostly a rich man's luxury.

Very interesting MarcL! Best wishes on your museum. I will check out the history of cigars. My interest is in ritualistic use of tobacco.

My interest is in ritualistic use of tobacco.

Have you read the "Jamestown Letters"? It is a big book and contains all of the correspondence that the first English settlers sent back to England. There are quite a few references to tobacco use but you have to read through the 400+ pages to find them. Seeing that you are in the Mid Atlantic /Southern states area this might be more "realistic" than how the Indians in the Plains used it.

Edit: The book is actually called "Jamestown Narratives" and it is over 900 pages.

i think of blue crabs and family vacation when i think of chesapeake bay so many years ago. i would be to expensive to buy if i was a whiskey because of the length of time of ageing. now i wan't a real crabcake with more crab than cake. i can almost feel the crab juice dripping off of my elbows at the picnic table in the middle of summer while smashing seasoned boiled or steamed blue crabs.
