I’m a pipe smoker and occasional cigar guy and I am joining for all the tobacco talk and blend recipes and so on.

I grew some plants this year and messed up just about every step along the way. I started seeds too early. Transplanted late. Got aphids. Messed up the curing and got black spots on about 75% of my final leaves which I figure is some kind of fun mold. Still I think it was a success. I learned a lot of what not to do.

Anyway, I’m happy to be here. This seems to be a great little community with some good information. Nice to meet y’all!

Welcome to the forum. The first year of growing is always an adventure. Be sure to read the New Growers' FAQ, and scan for topics in the Index of Key Forum Threads. Both are linked in the menu bar.

What varieties did you grow? What are you planning for 2021?

I wanted to keep it simple so I
Burley
Bright Virginia
Perique
CT shade
Sharzi (sp?)
And a couple other oriental types I can’t remember the names of off the top of my head.

honestly right from the seeding I messed up. I had the bottoms of 4 cardboard type egg cartons that I filled with potting soil trying for 8 types of tobacco. I immediately screwed up keeping track of which types I put where and didn’t wanna start over and waste the seeds so everything was jumbled right from the beginning. It was like a slapstick comedy as the season got rolling.

this year I’m going to shoot for bright Virginia, burley and pick one oriental type. I’m not sure on the exact seeds yet so I guess I better get on that part.

The best seed:
Northwood Seeds

For an Oriental, I would suggest Prilep 66-9/7.

Instead of makeshift seed starting, look into purchasing some 1020 trays (lattice, no holes, with holes) and 1020 inserts for either 48 or 72 cells per tray. The trays can be re-used for years. The inserts are easiest if new each year (so buy a bunch).

They also sell 3" pots, which some forum members use for an intermediate between the 1020 cells and transplant to the garden bed. I just go directly from the 1020 cells to the garden.

The buy a box of "craft sticks" (Popsicle sticks) to label the insert groups, and write on them on both sides with a Sharpie.

Also, I find it practical to do germination in separate jars with lids. Then I transplant individual seedlings into their 1020 cells, once they are large enough to handle with forceps or a toothpick.

Start seed 2 months before your average last frost date.

Bob

EDIT: Shirazi is named for the Iranian city of Shiraz.

Thank you for the information! I’m reading now and will pick up flats and inserts. I’ll probably stick to the 48 so I can transfer directly to the garden.
I’ll also put in a seed order in the next couple days.

Thanks again for helping get my head screwed on a little straighter.
