Hi everyone. My name is Tony and as the title implies, I live in Maine. I just received my very first order of loose tobacco to make cigars and I am incredibly excited to give it a try! Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Tony to the site and this great hobby. There are some great knowledgeable guys here that will always help newbies. I would suggest to use the sites search tool to look up answers to questions and if you can't find it there just ask.

Welcome! Been to Maine quite a few times. Usually to the Baxter State Park region and Moosehead Lake area. Been up the east coast a few times too. Whereabouts are you in Maine?

And what is someone from Maine called? A Mainer, Mainite, Mainahonian?.... inquiring minds want to know.

Yeah we call em mainiacs here hehe. Welcome neighbor.

On the whole driving thing, I remember everyone down south getting mad at northerners driving slow, but after living up here with 25-35mph posted limits for the last few years I tell you, if I drive 50mph now (read: insufferably slow in Florida) I feel like I'm going warp 9 and about to come off the road hehe.

If I had the space for it...
A well dug bed that is a mere 5' x 12' can easily grow 16 full-size tobacco plants, and allow easy access from the long sides for maintaining the plants.

BedLayoutExample.JPG

Example of one of my 5' x 12' beds.

To enlarge it, increase the length in 18" inch increments (adds 2 more plants), leaving the 5' width the same. Of course, you could go with the traditional rows of 2' between plants, 3-4' between rows.

When I transplant, I don't really measure anything. The 5' x 12' bed is already dug. I divide it into quarters, by marking the soil with a stick, then plant 4 plants (in that staggered pattern) in each quarter.
