Hello,

I am new to this hobby of growing tobacco for home use and I have a few questions. I will start by saying that I have been reading and watching videos and I've gotten a lot of mixed information and in some cases no information so... I am here. First question is, what type of tobacco is chew typically made from, and it's a two part question. I've found just a few seed descriptions that say they're used for chewing tobacco while there are many many types that say cigar filler, wrapper, cigarette blend etc.. surely the few I've seen labeled good for chew can't be the only ones. Also, what leaves are used in terms of ligero, seco, and volado? I know those are cigar terms but I don't know how else to describe them. I've watched one video that shows the texture I'd like to achieve in my finished product.

It can be found here:

Any information on how to safely ferment tobacco like that would be awesome.

Next question is regarding potency. Just how potent are tobaccos like mohawk for example... everywhere I find information on it... always says the same thing... it's very potent. If you make chew out of it or smoke it is it going to knock you on your ass... how strong are we talking?

Next question, is about flavoring. I've found various types of flavorings and I have a list of things to use to flavor chewing tobacco but I have no clue what I'm going to use yet. What natural or artificial products do people use besides"apple juice and molasses"? MSG, vegetable glycerine... I've heard some interesting ones, what do you like?

Last question is about variegated tobacco mutation. This may be the worst place to get an answer to this but I figured I'd include it here anyway. Has anyone used variegated tobacco for anything at all other than decoration? I know that marijuana is harsh and green tasting before the chlorophyll has broken down and I'm curious if a tobacco leaf lacking chlorophyll would produce a smooth smoking experience or a mild flavor.

I feel like it's a lot to ask for my first post but hey, I gotta start somewhere. I'm from New Mexico BTW. Got my first tobacco seeds started a few days ago. I'm going to start with isleta pueblo tobacco since its native to my area. Growing it inside. I look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to read the New Growers' FAQ (link at the top), and scan through the Index of Key Forum Threads (link above) for specific topics.

Welcome.

The video from those new york city frat boy carpetbagging hucksters is a bunch of marketing crap. They took fire cured, had perique made out of it, and are selling it in cigar form. I'm sure those sticks taste slightly better than their vastly overhyped acid line garbage. Yeah, not a fan.

Leaving the rant aside and getting back to your post, you shared that video for the fat ringy finger hipster hand stretching part @ 1:46 to show the texture of the tobacco you're looking to achieve, correct? This is good. You're looking to make side cut/side chew/loose leaf mailpouch type chewing tobacco, similar to lancaster or red man golden blend, right? 100% fine, but wanted to make sure before I write a bunch of advice on making the wrong type of smokeless.

Welcome to FTT.
Tullius summed it up, what you see in this video (in the barrels) is perique made with fire cured leaves which are then used in cigars.
I can't help you on chew because I have never tried to make some, but you can find many posts about chew/snus/snuff... Take a look at the FAQ ;)

Hello and thank you for your reply. I am indeed trying to get a product similar to Redman/stokers. Stokers Fred's choice is currently my favorite and while I think the slightly salty vanilla flavor will be easy to reproduce, I'm not sure how to replicate the moisture content in it without just making a mess. I know there are tons of overhyped and overcomplicated videos and processes... I came here to avoid that stuff lol.

As far as that video goes, the only thing I was interested in was the look/texture of the tobacco btw. I've smoked one acid cigar and the only reason I remember it is because it was terrible.

I didn't see a link for the FAQ anywhere, I'll find it and do some reading, thanks.

Welcome from Maryland. I get down to NM a few times a year (Whites Sands area). I suggest you start a seperate thread with "Chew" included in the title. This will attract more readers to the subject and it will help future readers when they do a search for chew.

I was going to respond (and suggest this earlier), but glad JBD already did so. Make a new post and I'll respond there. You asked a bunch of questions and I think I can help answer a couple of 'em anyways.

I'm sure others will chime in there too and help out more than me. Stokers isn't marketed for sale here locally despite the relative proximity and I've never seen it, so I'd be working blind on trying to copy it.

Alright, I was just in a speedway (gas station) yesterday and they had cans of "Stoker's Fine Cut Natural" dip at the price of 2@$1.40/ea. So of course I bought some. Must be some introductory pricing as I've never seen it around here before.

Has this weird strong geranium/rose flavoring: smells distinctly perfumy, like an older southern aunt's lingerie drawer that hasn't been opened for a long while. The smell carries over into the taste more than I'd like. I don't know what to think of it, but I'm glad I only bought two cans and not the whole roll.

I know you're looking to do side cut/chew, but this is such an unusual flavoring to snuff/dip I thought I'd mention it.
