is it weird that the plants show no sign of flowering yet? what amount of day light should make them want to flower?

According to the curator of the USDA GRIN collection, the shortening of the days has nothing to do with flowering, with the exception of most of the Mammoth varieties. How long have the plants been in the ground? What is the variety? They look strong and healthy, hopefully they'll put on more height and leaf size before flowering. Just sit back and wait and they'll reward you with a fine harvest. The two quickest ways to kill a tobacco plant are Roundup and Too Much Attention.

PS- Can you put a general location in your profile? (just the state is fine) Before long you'll have curing questions and the answers are going to be dependent upon where you live and your typical weather conditions.

so that's why people in Arizona can grow through the winter, i was a little confused on that. i would say they have been in the ground 50 days giver or take i cant exactly remember.

sorry stated where i lived in my introduction but never got around to editing the profile.

Nice looking tobacco--nice color. They look too young to flower, tho. I have a chart somewhere that relates degree days to tobacco maturity. I'll see if I ca find it.

decided not to water for over two weeks and the plats exploded. It raid really good for 4-5 hours this morning and is suppose to tomorrow as well. hopefully its it dose not stunt there growth to much. i wish i was harvesting like other parts of the country but i guess for were i live we are doing ok.

The "not watering" trick, is great for getting the roots to grow deeper. BTW (by the way), how deep do you have to dig before the ground is moist?

If you plug your variety into the GRIN site, then click the "Observations" link, you will be taken to a page that gives some general specs like leaf size, Days to Maturity, nicotine content, etc. Days to Maturity is measured from transplant to 50% of the plants showing one flower. Days to Maturity is a general estimate, as so many variables can affect it, but it should give you a basic idea of when your plants should flower.

thanks for the link Knucklehead i will have to give that a look.

ArizonaDave i will have to take a shovel to the garden but i would bet that there is no point in the summer were you would have to dig deeper than 1' to get to moist soil.

Howdy xx572xx,

I don't know a damn thing about growing tobacco in your area, but I spend some time up that way. I have some bowhunting friends in Milwaukie and Mulino, and they have some property that we bowhunt in the Eagle Creek area. Really nice country up that way :D
