This is a great forum. Took up seriously smoking cigars when I turned 42 last year and have been rolling my own for about 6 months now. Pretty much learned everything from this forum! Great place and a super fun hobby. My background is in chemistry and biology and have PhD in chemistry. I'd love to apply some GS/MS to cigar tobacco blends at some point down the road.

Thanks for making this forum a great resource.

Here is a picture of a few recent sticks I have rolled. Still working on a perfect triple cap!

Welcome to the forum. Gas chromatography and mass spec. have been used to analyze the head space above a container of Cyprian Latakia. It didn't help much, and actually was a bit misleading as to the firing materials used to create the Latakia. Tons of molecular genetics has been applied to various strains of tobacco, and generally creates a meaningless spider web of genetic relationships. Tobacco is a messy, allotetraploid beast, making any evaluation of gene methylation (on-off switches) difficult. And even a single variety of tobacco produces different leaf, depending on a host of soil conditions, climate conditions, seasonal weather, curing conditions and fermentation settings. Yikes!

To make matters much worse, Nicotiana tabacum, which used to be the pet plant of geneticists, is now planta non grata in all political circles, and has nearly vanished from academic genetics research. Enter Arabidopsis thaliana, stage left.

If you figure out anything, absolutely do let us know.

Bob
