Hi, my name is Rubén, although my nickname is Sommerswerd, and I have been a smoker for 30 years but I have only smoked rolling tobacco for 12 years.

The prices of rolling tobacco in Spain are not as high as in Australia, or other countries, but it is still expensive and they are not good tobaccos.

I have been buying leaf tobacco for a year but now they have approved a law in Spain that prohibits the sale of tobacco leaves except for companies.

An illegal law to prevent the poorest people from smoking cheaper.

So I have decided to grow my own tobacco at home and I have started 2-3 weeks ago.

I have read many forum threads but I would like to ask a beginner question.

Is it normal that it takes a long time for the first true leaves to appear after the seed germinates?

These are photographs of my seedlings.

I sowed on March 13, so 2 weeks have passed.

Thank you very much in advance.

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to read the New Growers' FAQ, and scan through the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads. Both are linked in the menu bar.

Most tobacco varieties remain quite tiny for the first month. After that, their growth becomes noticeable day-by-day. What variety are you growing?

Beto

Thanks, I'll check those threads.

Yes, it is completely normal for them to grow very slowly in the first weeks. By week 4 they start to grow much faster. Those look good for 2 weeks old.

Welcome Sommerswerd. You will enjoy your own tobacco much more than what you can usually buy. And the tax man will get nothing!

Thank you very much for the reply.

Indeed, better tobacco and zero taxes.

Your little seedlings look just fine, dont give them too much water but do give them lots of patience. You're on the right track for sure.

Thank you so much.

I make a small hole with a toothpick to check the humidity and then water them by putting the seedlings in a container with water.

When the surface begins to be wet again, I remove the seedbed and let the excess water drain off.
